Education – Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu met a group of students from Oman at Lok Niwas in Delhi on Thursday, praising their interest in science and encouraging them to build careers around their individual strengths and ambitions. The students were recognised after winning the Sastra Pratibha competition, organised by Vijnana Bharati at IIT Gandhinagar.

Focus on scientific thinking

During the interaction, Sandhu spoke about the value of curiosity, questioning and independent thought in education. He said young people need a strong scientific outlook and sound analytical abilities to contribute to research, innovation and social progress in the years ahead.

He noted that scientific learning is not limited to textbooks or examinations. Students, he said, should remain open to new ideas, explore how things work and develop the confidence to ask meaningful questions. Such habits can help create a stronger base for innovation and problem-solving.

Career choices should reflect personal interests

The Lieutenant-Governor advised the students to select future career paths that align with their genuine interests rather than decisions shaped mainly by social pressure. He said students should identify work that gives them a sense of purpose and satisfaction, then strive to perform at the highest level in that field.

Sandhu told the group that professional success is more sustainable when it is connected to personal motivation. He encouraged the students to take time to understand their abilities and aspirations before making important academic or career decisions.

Skills needed for a changing world

Referring to changes taking place across the world, Sandhu said academic qualifications alone may not be enough in a fast-moving environment. He underlined the importance of practical skills, flexibility and a willingness to continue learning throughout life.

According to him, students will need to keep updating their knowledge as technology, workplaces and global challenges evolve. Developing relevant skills alongside formal education can help young people respond more effectively to new opportunities and demands.

Learning from setbacks

Sandhu also urged the students not to treat failure as a final outcome. He said difficulties and disappointments can provide important lessons, helping individuals become more capable and better prepared for future challenges.

He encouraged young innovators to remain persistent when their plans do not work immediately. Resilience, he said, can help students improve their approach, learn from experience and move forward with greater confidence.

Praise for Vijnana Bharati

The Lieutenant-Governor appreciated Vijnana Bharati for its work in motivating students to engage with science and innovation. He said such initiatives help young learners connect with India’s scientific legacy while also preparing them to take part in modern research and technological development.

The meeting concluded with Sandhu extending his best wishes to the Sastra Pratibha winners for their academic progress and future work in science. He encouraged them to continue learning, stay committed to excellence and use their knowledge to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields.
