Rainfall – Panvel Shuts Educational Institutions as Raigad Faces Heavy Rain Alert
Rainfall – The Panvel Municipal Corporation has announced a holiday for schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, ashram schools, vocational institutes and training centres on Thursday, July 2, following a heavy rainfall warning for Raigad district. The closure applies to institutions operating within the civic body’s jurisdiction.

Holiday Ordered Under Disaster Management Provisions
The decision was issued on Wednesday by Municipal Commissioner Mangesh Chitale under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The civic body said the move followed directions linked to the weather situation in Panvel Taluka.
In its official circular, the corporation noted that the Raigad District Collector had declared a holiday on July 2 for educational institutions and Anganwadi centres because of the expected weather conditions. The order aims to reduce travel-related risks for students, staff and families during periods of intense rain.
Orange Alert Issued for Raigad District
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai has placed Raigad under an orange alert for July 2. Forecasts indicate that several locations in the district may receive heavy to very heavy rain, while isolated areas could experience extremely heavy rainfall.
Weather agencies have also issued a red alert for Raigad on July 3 and July 4. Heavy to very heavy showers are expected to continue across parts of the district during this period, raising the possibility of waterlogging, difficult road conditions and disruption to normal movement.
Civic Body Urges Residents to Remain Cautious
Along with the closure notice, the Panvel Municipal Corporation appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel while heavy rain continues. Citizens have been advised not to enter waterlogged stretches or low-lying areas where water levels may rise quickly.
The civic body also urged people to stay away from rivers, drains, lakes and other potentially dangerous locations. During intense rainfall, these areas can become unsafe due to strong water flow, overflowing drains and poor visibility.
Motorists have been asked to drive carefully and avoid taking vehicles through flooded roads. Residents are also encouraged to follow local administration updates, particularly if weather conditions worsen during the day.
Educational Institutions Expected to Follow Official Directions
Schools, colleges and other institutions covered by the order are expected to remain closed for the day. Parents and students have been advised to check official messages from their respective institutions for any updates regarding examinations, online classes or rescheduled academic activities.
The municipal administration has not indicated whether the closure will be extended beyond July 2. Any further decision is likely to depend on rainfall intensity, local conditions and fresh weather advisories issued for the region.
Rainfall Situation to Be Closely Monitored
Authorities are expected to monitor conditions across Panvel and nearby areas as the rain system develops. Emergency and civic teams may be deployed where required, especially in locations vulnerable to flooding or waterlogging.
Residents have been urged to remain alert, follow safety instructions and avoid relying on unverified information. With a red alert in place for the following two days, officials are likely to continue reviewing the situation and issue further advisories if needed.
