Monsoon – Delhi-NCR Rain Brings Relief as Uttarakhand Faces Heavy Showers

Monsoon – Rainfall swept across several parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, easing the sticky heat and uncomfortable humidity that had affected residents in recent days. The showers marked a welcome change in weather conditions, while cloudy skies and intermittent rain were expected to continue through the day.

Weather Alert Issued for Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department has placed Delhi and nearby areas under a yellow alert, advising people to remain cautious during changing weather conditions. The forecast includes generally cloudy skies, moderate rain in some locations and strong surface winds across the National Capital Region.

The weather office said the ongoing monsoon activity could bring short but intense spells of rain in isolated pockets. Gusty winds may also affect traffic movement and outdoor activities in some parts of the region.

Temperature Drops After Recent Heat

Delhi’s daytime temperature had already begun to decline before Thursday’s rainfall. On Wednesday, the city recorded maximum temperatures between 33 degrees Celsius and 34.8 degrees Celsius, lower than the intense heat experienced earlier in the week.

For Thursday, the IMD estimated that the maximum temperature would remain between 32 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius. Light to moderate rain and wind activity were expected to keep conditions relatively cooler than previous days.

Monsoon Expected to Expand Across North India

Meteorological officials said the Southwest Monsoon is likely to move further into more parts of North India in the coming days. The advancing weather system is expected to increase the possibility of broader rainfall across several northern states.

The strengthening monsoon circulation is likely to influence regional weather patterns, bringing more cloud cover and rain to areas that have been experiencing hot and humid conditions. Authorities are monitoring the situation as rainfall activity develops over the next few days.

Uttarakhand Placed Under Orange Alert

In Uttarakhand, the monsoon covered the entire state by Wednesday, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for Thursday. The warning covers the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in five districts, including Dehradun.

Officials have cautioned that intense showers may lead to waterlogging in urban areas and increase the risk of landslides in vulnerable hill regions. Residents and travellers have been advised to stay alert, particularly in areas prone to slope instability and road disruptions during prolonged rainfall.

Rapid Monsoon Progress Reported

The Dehradun Meteorological Centre said the monsoon had reached most areas of Uttarakhand on Tuesday before spreading across the state by Wednesday. Its quick advance brought widespread rain to several districts, signalling the start of more active monsoon conditions in the Himalayan state.

Rainfall was reported from both plains and hill areas during the day. The weather department said the distribution of showers reflected the expanding reach of the seasonal system across Uttarakhand.

Rainfall Recorded Across Several Districts

Dehradun received 56 mm of rain on Wednesday, while Jolly Grant recorded 52.5 mm. Other locations that reported notable rainfall included Laksar with 49 mm, Mussoorie with 43 mm, Rudraprayag with 32.5 mm and Haldwani with 29.5 mm.

Pauri Garhwal recorded 28.5 mm of rain, followed by Kirtinagar at 23.5 mm and Khanpur at 23 mm. The rainfall data showed that the monsoon had affected a wide area of the state within a short period.
