Speaking on Wednesday local time, Trump said Theodore Roosevelt’s views on communism still carried significance as the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its independence. He cited Roosevelt’s writings while arguing that communist ideology posed a serious challenge to the country.

Trump cites Roosevelt’s criticism of communist ideology

Trump described Roosevelt as a determined opponent of communism and quoted the former president’s warning about the consequences of communist socialism. He said Roosevelt believed such ideas, if carried through fully, could damage civilisation.

The president then broadened the message, saying communism represented a major long-term threat to the United States. He compared its potential impact with some of the country’s most difficult moments, including the two world wars, the attack on Pearl Harbor and the September 11 attacks.

Trump said the ideology could spread gradually if it was not confronted. He added that his administration would not allow the United States to become a communist country.

Speech linked to America’s upcoming 250th anniversary

The address was delivered as preparations continue for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which will be marked on July 4. Trump said the milestone should remind Americans of the country’s history, purpose and national character.

He described Americans as a people shaped by courage and ambition, and said the anniversary should encourage the country to protect the values associated with its founding.

Trump also referred to Roosevelt’s idea of “New Nationalism,” presenting it as an approach that placed the interests of the wider nation above partisan divisions, lobbying groups and special interests.

Roosevelt’s legacy highlighted at North Dakota event

Trump said Theodore Roosevelt’s life offered an example of leadership built on courage, determination and public service. He quoted Roosevelt’s view that freedom could not endure in the hands of people unwilling to defend it.

The president said Roosevelt believed in a country driven by work and achievement, rather than complacency or decline. He also noted that Roosevelt’s years in North Dakota helped shape his outlook before he entered national politics.

Theodore Roosevelt served as president from 1901 to 1909. His administration is remembered for conservation efforts, the expansion of national parks and a more active American role in global affairs. His time in the Badlands is often seen as an important period in the development of his political ideas.

America First message returns during remarks

Trump also used the event to restate his America First policy position. He said the Declaration of Independence placed a responsibility on the federal government to serve the American people and prioritise national interests.

Although the ceremony centred on Roosevelt’s legacy, Trump also addressed immigration, economic policy, energy production, the Panama Canal and Iran. These topics were linked to his broader message about sovereignty, security and American identity.

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opened this week in Medora as national attention turns toward the 250th anniversary celebrations. The Trump administration has made the anniversary a key national observance, with planned events expected to focus on patriotism, historical remembrance and the country’s founding principles.
