Politics – MDMK General Council Weighs Future of Alliance with DMK
Politics – The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) is holding a crucial General Council meeting in Chennai, where the party is expected to decide its future relationship with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) convened its General Council meeting on Saturday at Vijaysree Mahal on New Avadi Road in Anna Nagar, Chennai. The session is being chaired by the party’s Presidium Chairman, Auditor A. Arjunaraj, and has attracted significant political attention as members deliberate on the party’s next strategic move in Tamil Nadu politics.
Decision on Alliance Under Focus
The meeting carries considerable importance because party leaders are expected to discuss whether the MDMK should continue its association with the DMK. Political observers are closely monitoring the outcome, as recent developments have reshaped alliances across the state following the 2026 Assembly elections.
The party has also scheduled a press conference at 3 pm, during which senior leaders are expected to present the resolutions adopted by the General Council and formally announce any major political decisions.
Political Realignment After Assembly Elections
Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has witnessed major changes since the 2026 Assembly elections. Several parties that previously contested as part of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) under the leadership of the DMK have gradually moved away from the coalition after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party and later formed the state government.
Among those that distanced themselves from the DMK-led alliance were the Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the Left parties, and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). These parties subsequently extended their support to the TVK government, helping it secure a working majority in the Assembly.
IUML Explained Its Decision
A significant shift came on June 20 when the Indian Union Muslim League formally announced that it could no longer remain part of the DMK-led alliance under the prevailing political circumstances. The party, however, reaffirmed its support for the government headed by TVK.
Following the party’s general body meeting in Chennai, IUML national president Kader Mohideen stated that the leadership had adopted a resolution confirming its departure from the alliance. He also said that former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had been informed about the decision and that the party chose to support the TVK administration to maintain political stability in the state and avoid any possibility of Governor’s rule.
According to the resolution, the IUML respected the public mandate delivered in the Assembly election and had therefore decided to support the government led by C. Joseph Vijay. The party maintained that continuing its association with the DMK alliance was no longer feasible in the prevailing political environment.
Election Results Changed State Politics
The results of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, declared on May 4, marked a major turning point in the state’s political history. The TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, emerging as the largest party, while the election recorded an impressive voter turnout of 85.1 percent.
The DMK won 59 seats, followed by the AIADMK with 47. Other successful parties included the Congress with five seats, Pattali Makkal Katchi with four, CPI and CPI(M) with two seats each, IUML and VCK with two seats apiece, while DMDK, AMMK, and the BJP secured one seat each. The verdict ended the decades-long dominance traditionally enjoyed by Tamil Nadu’s two principal Dravidian parties and signaled the beginning of a new political phase in the state.
