FarmersProtest – Delhi CM Calls for Annual Remembrance of Emergency to Protect Democracy
FarmersProtest – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has called for an annual remembrance of the Emergency period, saying it should continue to serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and constitutional principles.

Chief Minister Advocates Annual Observance
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the anniversary of the Emergency should be observed every year to ensure that future generations remain aware of one of the most significant chapters in India’s democratic history. Speaking at a seminar organised in the national capital to mark the 51st anniversary of the Emergency, she compared the annual remembrance to the tradition of Ravan Dahan during Dussehra, describing both as symbolic reminders of overcoming injustice.
The programme, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to observe “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,” brought together political leaders, party workers, and individuals who had experienced imprisonment during the Emergency.
Remarks on Democracy and the Constitution
During her address, Gupta stressed that democracy belongs to the people and cannot be claimed by any individual or political group. Without naming anyone directly, she criticised political leaders who, according to her, present themselves as the sole defenders of constitutional values. She maintained that the Constitution cannot be reduced to a political symbol carried by a few individuals and said democratic institutions derive their strength from the collective will of citizens.
She also stated that the experience of the Emergency serves as a lasting lesson, reinforcing the need to protect civil liberties and constitutional rights. According to her, the annual observance should remind people that such a period should never be allowed to return.
Tribute to Leaders Who Opposed the Emergency
Highlighting the role of prominent leaders during the Emergency, Gupta paid tribute to Jayaprakash Narayan and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. She said both leaders displayed determination and resilience during a difficult period in Indian politics and continued to defend democratic values despite facing considerable challenges.
The Chief Minister noted that their commitment has become an enduring example for future generations, demonstrating the importance of standing firm in support of constitutional governance during times of political uncertainty.
Senior BJP Leaders Attend Programme
The event was attended by former Union minister Smriti Irani and Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, along with several senior party leaders. Organisers also honoured individuals who had been imprisoned during the Emergency, recognising their experiences and contributions in preserving democratic ideals.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said public life should be guided by service rather than personal ambition. She remarked that responsible leadership is measured by commitment to the people, respect for democratic institutions, and adherence to constitutional principles rather than the pursuit of political power.
Historical Background of the Emergency
The Emergency remains one of the most debated periods in India’s political history. It was imposed on June 25, 1975, by the government led by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and remained in force until March 21, 1977. During this period, several civil liberties were suspended, opposition leaders were detained, and restrictions were placed on the media and political activities.
More than five decades later, the period continues to be remembered through political discussions and public events, with different parties presenting their own perspectives on its legacy and its impact on India’s democratic framework.
