Crop Insurance – NTR District Encourages Farmers to Secure Kharif Crop Protection

Crop Insurance –  Farmers in NTR district have been encouraged to enrol in government-backed crop insurance schemes to reduce financial risks arising from adverse weather conditions and crop damage.

Crop insurance ntr farmers

NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha has appealed to both loanee and non-loanee farmers to take advantage of crop insurance schemes designed for the Kharif 2026 season. During a review meeting with district officials on Friday, he stressed the importance of wider participation in these schemes, saying they can provide vital financial support if crops are affected by unfavourable weather or other unforeseen circumstances. The Collector also instructed officials to ensure that farmers receive timely information before the enrolment deadlines.

Awareness Campaigns to Reach More Farmers

Highlighting the possibility of El Niño conditions affecting agricultural production, Lakshmisha directed officials to step up awareness programmes across the district. He asked departments concerned to organise information drives explaining the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) as well as the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme. According to the Collector, improving awareness among farmers is essential so that they can make informed decisions about protecting their crops against weather-related losses.

Crops Included Under Insurance Schemes

For the Kharif 2026 season, paddy, red chilli, maize and green gram have been brought under the coverage of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. Cotton, meanwhile, has been included under the Restructured Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme. Officials said the schemes have been designed to provide financial assistance to eligible farmers if their crops suffer damage due to notified risks covered under the respective insurance programmes.

The Collector explained that the insurance benefits offered under the schemes are substantial when compared with the premium paid by farmers. As an example, he noted that paddy cultivation is eligible for insurance coverage of up to ₹42,500 per acre, while the farmer’s contribution towards the premium is only ₹850 per acre. He said such support can help reduce the financial burden on cultivators during difficult agricultural seasons.

Important Enrolment Deadlines Announced

Farmers have been advised to complete the enrolment process within the prescribed timelines to remain eligible for insurance coverage. The final date for cotton registration is July 24. Farmers cultivating red chilli, maize and green gram must complete enrolment by July 31, while those growing paddy have until August 15 to register under the scheme.

Multiple Registration Options Available

Lakshmisha said the premium amount for loanee farmers will be automatically deducted along with their crop loans, making the enrolment process simpler for them. Non-loanee farmers can register through banks, financial institutions, Common Service Centres (CSCs), Swarna Gramam centres, post offices, or by using the National Crop Insurance Portal. They will need to submit the required self-declaration and other necessary documents during registration.

The district administration has urged eligible farmers not to wait until the last moment and to complete the enrolment process well before the deadlines. Officials believe that greater participation in the insurance schemes will strengthen financial security for farmers and help them better manage risks associated with changing weather patterns during the Kharif season.
