Alpha – Anil Kapoor Says Leadership in Cinema Should Rise Above Gender
Alpha – Veteran actor Anil Kapoor believes the idea of being an “Alpha” is no longer tied to gender but instead reflects qualities such as confidence, determination, and the ability to lead a story with impact. Speaking about his upcoming film Alpha, Kapoor said modern audiences are increasingly drawn to compelling characters rather than traditional labels associated with male or female leads.

Changing the Traditional View of Lead Characters
Sharing his thoughts on the film, Anil Kapoor explained that Indian cinema has gradually moved beyond conventional definitions of heroes and heroines. According to him, storytelling today focuses more on the strength of a character’s presence than on whether the lead role is played by a man or a woman.
He said Alpha represents this evolving approach by encouraging audiences to look beyond gender-based classifications. Kapoor believes that an “Alpha” is someone who displays courage, conviction, and the ability to shape the narrative, qualities that can belong to any character regardless of gender.
Audiences Looking for Fresh Stories
Kapoor expressed confidence that viewers will appreciate Alpha because cinema-goers are now seeking fresh experiences on the big screen. He noted that audiences have become more open to stories that challenge long-held assumptions and introduce different perspectives through engaging narratives.
According to the actor, films that move away from predictable formulas have a greater chance of creating meaningful conversations while offering entertaining theatrical experiences.
Support for Stories That Challenge Conventions
Speaking from a personal perspective, Kapoor mentioned that he has watched both of his daughters consistently support projects that encourage stronger and more diverse representation for women in films. He said they have always believed in expanding creative opportunities and backing stories that question established norms within the industry.
He added that they are enthusiastic about Alpha because productions of this nature have the potential to reshape the action genre and inspire more filmmakers to explore similar themes in the future.
A New Definition of Heroism in Indian Cinema
Kapoor also shared his hope that Alpha will contribute to a broader shift in the way leadership and heroism are portrayed on screen. Instead of asking whether a film features a male or female lead, he believes audiences should focus on identifying the character who truly drives the story forward.
He described this evolving mindset as an important step for Indian cinema, saying that films should celebrate leadership without attaching it to gender. In his view, strong storytelling becomes more meaningful when characters are judged by their actions, values, and influence rather than traditional categories.
Film Set for Worldwide Release
Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha features Anil Kapoor in a role that has intentionally been kept under wraps to avoid revealing important story details. The film also stars Bobby Deol as the primary antagonist.
The action entertainer is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 3. With its focus on redefining leadership and presenting a fresh perspective on action storytelling, the film aims to offer audiences a different cinematic experience while contributing to the ongoing evolution of mainstream Indian cinema.
