DrugTrafficking – BJP President Calls for Stronger National Drive Towards Drug-Free India
DrugTrafficking – On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, BJP National President Nitin Nabin urged citizens to support the nationwide mission to eliminate drug abuse and strengthen efforts aimed at protecting future generations.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin on Friday reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to combating drug abuse and illegal narcotics trade, praising the Narendra Modi-led government for expanding measures against the growing challenge. Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, he appealed to people across the country to actively participate in building a healthier and drug-free India.
Call for Collective Action Against Drug Abuse
In a message shared on social media platform X, Nabin encouraged citizens to renew their commitment to creating a society free from addiction. He said that the country’s progress depends on safeguarding young people from substance abuse and promoting a healthier social environment.
According to him, the government has significantly strengthened its anti-drug campaign through the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, tougher action against narcotics trafficking, improved border monitoring, public awareness programmes, and wider access to rehabilitation and de-addiction facilities. He stressed that public participation remains essential to achieving the vision of a developed and addiction-free India.
Government Continues Long-Term Anti-Drug Campaign
The Union Government has consistently highlighted the dangers associated with narcotics since 2014. During an episode of Mann Ki Baat in December that year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had described drug addiction as a force that leads to darkness, destruction and devastation, while urging society to remain vigilant against the threat.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment noted that sustained efforts over the past decade have strengthened coordination among various agencies working to curb substance abuse. These initiatives are intended to reduce drug dependency while encouraging rehabilitation and community support.
Amit Shah Releases New Narcotics Control Vision
Earlier on Friday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled the Narcotics Control Vision Document 2026-2029 during the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) in New Delhi.
Addressing officials, Shah called for intelligence-based operations supported by modern technology to dismantle drug trafficking networks. He emphasized that agencies must adopt a network-centric strategy and maintain a firm approach to effectively counter organised narcotics crimes across the country.
Survey Highlights Scale of Substance Abuse
A nationwide study conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment through the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre at AIIMS New Delhi, and published in 2019, assessed the extent of substance abuse across India.
The survey estimated that nearly 7.1 crore people were involved in some form of substance use, highlighting the need for sustained prevention, treatment and rehabilitation efforts. The findings have continued to guide policy decisions and awareness initiatives aimed at reducing addiction.
Expansion of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan was launched on August 15, 2020, initially covering 272 districts identified as highly vulnerable to substance abuse. As part of its expanded outreach, the campaign was extended to every district in the country on August 15, 2023.
The programme focuses on involving educational institutions, youth, women, children, civil society organisations and local communities in awareness, prevention and rehabilitation activities. The government aims to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders to reduce the impact of drug addiction and encourage healthier communities across the nation
