Matrimonial Fraud – A Kolkata resident has been arrested after allegedly misleading a woman he met through a matrimonial platform by promising marriage and later obtaining money and valuables from her under false pretences.

The arrest was made following a complaint filed by a woman from Naihati in North 24 Parganas district. According to police officials, the accused allegedly built a relationship with the complainant through a matrimonial website while using a false identity. Investigators claim he presented himself as a financially successful professional and gradually gained the woman’s trust before seeking financial assistance.

Alleged False Identity Used on Matrimonial Platforms

Police identified the accused as Matiur Rahman, a resident of Kolkata’s Bowbazar area. Authorities said he reportedly created profiles on matrimonial websites using the name Manik Roy. Through one such profile, he came into contact with the complainant and developed a close relationship with her over time.

During their conversations, the accused allegedly claimed to have a highly paid job with an annual income of around ₹1.5 crore. The woman reportedly believed his claims and informed her family about the relationship, expecting it to lead to marriage.

Requests for Money Raised Concerns

According to the complaint, the relationship took a troubling turn when the accused began repeatedly asking for money and jewellery. The woman told investigators that she initially trusted him and did not suspect any wrongdoing.

She later alleged that she handed over approximately ₹85,000 in cash along with a gold bracelet and other valuables. The requests reportedly continued over a period of time, with the accused providing various reasons for needing financial help.

Inconsistencies Triggered Suspicion

The complainant informed police that her doubts grew when the accused claimed that a relative had died and urgently required financial support. He allegedly instructed her to transfer money to a bank account linked to a person he described as being based in Mumbai.

However, during her own inquiries, the woman reportedly discovered information suggesting that the accused’s family connections were linked to East Burdwan district rather than the location he had mentioned. The discrepancy prompted her to investigate further.

Social Media Search Revealed Similar Allegations

Police said the woman examined the accused’s social media presence and came across references to several other women. She subsequently contacted some of them to verify her concerns.

According to investigators, those conversations revealed a pattern of similar behaviour. Multiple women allegedly reported being approached in the same manner, with promises of marriage followed by requests for money or valuables.

Investigation Suggests Wider Pattern

During the preliminary investigation, police reportedly found indications that the accused may have targeted several women through matrimonial websites over an extended period. Authorities are also examining allegations that he entered into marriages with numerous women while using deceptive methods.

Investigators stated that the woman eventually approached law enforcement and filed a formal complaint detailing her experience. Acting on the information gathered during the inquiry, Kolkata Police arrested the accused on Tuesday night.

Officials said further investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud and to identify whether additional victims may have been affected. Police are also reviewing evidence related to online profiles, financial transactions and communications linked to the case.
