Membership Drive – JD(U) Surpasses One Crore Members in Bihar Expansion Push
Membership Drive – Janata Dal (United) has announced a major organisational achievement, stating that its membership base has crossed the one-crore mark during an extensive outreach campaign aimed at strengthening the party across Bihar.

According to party leaders, the membership initiative was launched by Nitish Kumar on December 6, 2025, as part of a long-term strategy to expand the organisation and increase grassroots participation. The campaign has reportedly enrolled 1,00,01,925 members as of June 2, 2026.
Membership Campaign Reaches Grassroots Levels
National Working President Sanjay Jha shared details of the achievement through a social media message, expressing gratitude to party workers for carrying out the campaign across districts, blocks, and booth-level units. He also thanked the people of Bihar for supporting the organisation’s expansion efforts.
Jha said the party remains focused on addressing public aspirations and continuing its development-oriented agenda under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. He noted that the growing membership reflects increasing engagement with the party’s programmes and objectives.
Part of a Long-Term Organisational Strategy
The membership exercise forms a key component of JD(U)’s broader organisational roadmap covering the period from 2025 to 2028. Party leaders believe that adding more than one crore members within six months represents an important milestone in their effort to build a stronger political network across the state.
The organisation has been working to increase its presence at the grassroots level while strengthening internal structures. Leaders view the latest figures as evidence of progress toward their goal of emerging as one of Bihar’s most influential political organisations by 2028.
Electoral Performance Shows Recent Improvement
The membership milestone comes against the backdrop of improved electoral results for the party in recent years. In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, JD(U) secured 43 seats and became the state’s third-largest political party.
Its performance improved in subsequent elections. During the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the party won 12 parliamentary seats, equalling the tally secured by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Bihar. The momentum continued in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, where JD(U) significantly increased its representation by winning 85 seats.
Leadership Credits Organisational Efforts
Party officials have linked much of the recent expansion to organisational initiatives undertaken after Sanjay Jha assumed a key leadership role at the national level. Leaders say focused outreach programmes, cadre mobilisation, and stronger local engagement helped accelerate membership growth across the state.
The latest figures also underline the competitive political landscape in Bihar. BJP is reported to have around 1.56 crore members, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has previously claimed a membership base exceeding one crore.
National Executive Meeting Scheduled
Following the membership achievement, JD(U) has scheduled a meeting of its National Executive Committee on June 21. The gathering is expected to review organisational developments and discuss future strategies aimed at strengthening the party’s position in the coming years.
Reacting to the milestone, state party president Umesh Kushwaha described it as a significant moment in the organisation’s journey. He said the growing membership reflects public trust in Nitish Kumar’s leadership and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting the vision of a developed Bihar through continued public engagement and organisational strengthening.
