Netflix – Netflix has moved forward with another major step in bringing Taylor Jenkins Reid’s acclaimed novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” to the screen, appointing actor and filmmaker Anna Kendrick as the director of the long-awaited project. New Leadership for the Adaptation

Kendrick will oversee the film adaptation after earlier directors attached to the project departed during development. While the reasons behind those exits have not been publicly disclosed, Netflix appears committed to advancing the production with fresh creative leadership.

Originally published in 2017, Reid’s bestselling novel follows the life of Evelyn Hugo, a legendary and highly private Hollywood actress who agrees to share her life story in a final interview. During the conversation, she opens up about her personal and professional journey, offering insights into the seven marriages that shaped her life while revealing secrets tied to fame, ambition, relationships and public image.

Popular Novel Continues to Attract Interest

Netflix secured adaptation rights to the novel in 2022, generating excitement among readers who have followed the book’s growing popularity over the years. Despite the anticipation, progress on the film has been gradual, and the studio has yet to announce casting decisions for the leading roles.

For several years, many fans have expressed support for Jessica Chastain portraying Evelyn Hugo. The Oscar-winning actress became a frequent choice in online discussions due to her resemblance to the character’s description in the novel. However, Chastain previously addressed the speculation and stated that she would not be involved in the project.

Screenplay Under Revision

The script for the adaptation was initially written by Liz Tigelaar, whose previous work includes acclaimed television productions such as “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Tiny Beautiful Things.” The screenplay is now being revised by Francesca Sloane, known for her contributions to projects including “Atlanta,” “Fargo,” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

The ongoing script development reflects Netflix’s efforts to ensure the adaptation meets expectations surrounding one of the most discussed contemporary novels in recent years.

Taylor Jenkins Reid Remains Involved

Author Taylor Jenkins Reid is continuing her involvement in the production as an executive producer. She will work alongside Margaret Chernin, while production responsibilities are being handled by Liza Chasin of 3Dot Productions and Brad Mendelsohn of Circle Management + Productions.

The upcoming film represents another major screen adaptation of Reid’s literary work. Previously, her novel “Daisy Jones & the Six” was transformed into a television limited series by Amazon in 2023. That production earned attention for its portrayal of a fictional rock band and its connections to classic music industry influences.

Kendrick Expands Her Directing Career

Although Anna Kendrick is widely recognized for acting roles in the “Pitch Perfect” series and the “Twilight” franchise, she has increasingly expanded her work behind the camera. Her directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” received strong industry attention after Netflix acquired the film following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.

Alongside her directing responsibilities, Kendrick continues her acting career. She is expected to appear in the upcoming drama “Misty Green,” directed by Chris Rock, as well as the comedy film “Babies,” directed by Lauren Miller Rogen.

With a new director now in place and script revisions underway, Netflix’s adaptation of “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” appears to be entering a fresh phase of development as audiences await further announcements regarding casting and production timelines.
