Politics – Leadership Shift Talks and Key Appointments Dominate Political Discussions
Politics – Congress leadership developments and major administrative appointments remain at the center of political attention across several states, with discussions ranging from Karnataka’s expected leadership transition to important vacancies in senior government positions.

The political landscape in Karnataka has witnessed significant developments ahead of a likely leadership change scheduled for June 3. According to party sources, a crucial decision regarding Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s elevation emerged after discussions involving senior Congress leaders in New Delhi. While initial meetings between party leadership and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly focused on cabinet restructuring and nominations to the Legislative Council, the situation evolved later in the day. Sources indicate that after consultations with senior party figures, a proposal for a leadership transition was placed before Siddaramaiah. Party insiders suggest that consultations involving Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra played a key role in bringing clarity to the long-pending issue.
Informal Exchange Draws Attention in Delhi
A casual interaction between two Union Ministers became a talking point following a meeting between Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and Members of Parliament from the state in New Delhi. As leaders gathered outside the venue after the event, Janata Dal (United) leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, noticed that a colleague had arrived in a newly acquired electric vehicle. In a humorous remark, he referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier appeal promoting restraint in purchasing new vehicles as part of cost-saving efforts. The exchange prompted a light-hearted explanation that the vehicle had been purchased months before the advisory was issued, drawing smiles from those present.
Competition Intensifies for Rajya Sabha Nominations
With Rajya Sabha elections approaching, discussions over potential candidates have gathered momentum within Congress ranks. Andhra Pradesh Congress president Y S Sharmila is among the leaders being considered for a seat from Karnataka, where the party is expected to secure multiple positions. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is also widely seen as a strong contender for one of the available seats. Karnataka minister K J George’s name continues to circulate amid indications that he may prefer a parliamentary role over remaining in state politics.
Meanwhile, political activity has also intensified in Jharkhand, where Congress is expected to contest successfully for one Upper House seat. Several senior leaders, including Pawan Khera, Rajesh Thakur, Dhiraj Prasad Sahu and Subodh Kant Sahay, remain under consideration. Party observers note that efforts to balance local representation with national leadership interests are shaping the selection process.
Early Transfer Sparks Administrative Speculation
The recent return of CBI Joint Director Vidya Jayant Kulkarni to her parent Tamil Nadu cadre has generated discussion within administrative circles. Although the official order cites personal reasons for the move, the decision has attracted attention because it was made under a relatively uncommon provision of the IPS Tenure Policy. The timing of the transfer, shortly after the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, has led to considerable speculation. Officials believe her extensive experience in central investigative agencies could be valuable to the state administration. Some observers also view her as a potential link for smoother coordination between state and central authorities.
Punjab Continues Search for Permanent Police Chief
Punjab’s efforts to appoint a full-time Director General of Police remain unresolved, extending a period of uncertainty that began in 2022. Acting DGP Gaurav Yadav has continued in the role since the departure of former police chief V K Bhawra on leave. Despite ongoing attention to the matter, the appointment process has yet to reach a conclusion.
Sources indicate that the Union Public Service Commission has sought additional information regarding pending legal matters connected to Sharad Satya Chauhan, currently serving as Director of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau. The clarification is reportedly required before a panel can be formed to finalize candidates for the state’s top policing position. Chauhan remains the senior-most officer among those recommended by the Punjab government, while scrutiny linked to an ongoing investigation has contributed to delays in the selection process.
