Investigation – Former Competition Commission Chief Dies After South Delhi House Fire
Investigation – Former bureaucrat Dhanendra Kumar, who served as the inaugural chairman of the Competition Commission of India, passed away after a fire erupted at his residence in South Delhi’s Hauz Khas area late Wednesday night. Authorities said the blaze is suspected to have originated following an air-conditioner malfunction, though the exact cause is yet to be confirmed through investigation.
The incident occurred at Kumar’s home in Hauz Khas Enclave, where emergency services received an alert shortly before midnight. Fire department officials said a distress call was logged at approximately 11:24 pm, prompting an immediate response from firefighting teams.
Emergency Teams Responded Swiftly
According to officials from Delhi Fire Services, two fire tenders, including a water bowser, were dispatched to the location soon after the alarm was raised. Firefighters arrived at the residential property and began efforts to contain the flames that had spread through parts of the building.
The fire primarily affected household items on the ground floor of the ground-plus-two-storey house. Wooden window structures located on the first floor were also damaged during the incident. Rescue and firefighting operations continued for nearly an hour before the blaze was fully brought under control.
Residents and Police Assisted Rescue Efforts
Before fire personnel reached the scene, local residents and Police Control Room (PCR) staff had already stepped in to assist those inside the house. Two injured individuals were moved from the property and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for urgent medical treatment.
Officials noted that the quick response by neighbours and police personnel helped ensure immediate medical attention for those affected by the fire. Emergency responders continued assessing the situation while firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading further.
Smoke Inhalation Proved Fatal
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal confirmed that Dhanendra Kumar later died while undergoing treatment. According to police, the former civil servant suffered severe smoke inhalation during the incident, which ultimately proved fatal.
Authorities have not reported any additional fatalities linked to the fire. The condition of the second injured person has not been detailed publicly as investigations continue.
