President Droupadi Murmu described Eid al-Adha as a festival representing devotion, sacrifice, and compassion toward humanity. In her message, she extended greetings to citizens, particularly members of the Muslim community, and spoke about the deeper values connected with the occasion.

Importance of Eid al-Adha in Islamic Tradition

Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid or Bakra Eid, is among the most important festivals in Islam. The festival is observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It also marks the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage held in Mecca.

The occasion commemorates the faith and obedience of Prophet Abraham, who, according to Islamic tradition, was willing to sacrifice his son as an act of devotion to God. The festival symbolises sacrifice, faith, and commitment to spiritual values.

As the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, the date of Eid al-Adha changes every year in the Gregorian calendar. This year, the festival is being observed on May 28.

Celebrations Marked by Charity and Togetherness

Across different parts of India, families gathered for prayers, festive meals, and charitable activities as part of the celebrations. Eid al-Adha is widely seen as a time for reflection, forgiveness, and helping those in need.

Many people use the occasion to strengthen relationships within communities and promote goodwill among neighbours and relatives. Acts of charity and sharing food with the underprivileged remain an important part of the observance.

The festival continues to carry a strong message of compassion, unity, and social harmony, values that were echoed in the greetings shared by leaders from across the political spectrum.
