Politics – Rajasthan Rajya Sabha Poll Schedule Announced for Three Seats

Politics –  The Election Commission of India has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan, where voting for three vacant seats will take place on June 18. The counting of votes and declaration of results will also be completed on the same day. The vacancies have arisen due to the end of the current terms of Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajendra Gehlot, and Congress member Neeraj Dangi, whose tenure concludes on June 21.

BJP Begins Internal Consultations

The Bharatiya Janata Party has already started discussions over potential candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections. According to party insiders, detailed deliberations were held during the Rajasthan BJP core committee meeting conducted on May 16. Following the meeting, the responsibility of forwarding the shortlisted names to the party’s central leadership was assigned to state BJP president Madan Rathore and Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.

Sources within the party suggest that the BJP is carefully evaluating social and political factors before finalising its candidates. One of the two expected BJP nominees may reportedly come from the OBC community, reflecting the party’s broader strategy to strengthen caste representation and maintain electoral balance in Rajasthan. Discussions regarding the second nominee are still underway.

Congress Yet to Finalise Candidate List

The Congress party, on the other hand, has not yet announced its candidates for the Rajya Sabha contest. Senior party leaders are said to be consulting with the central leadership in Delhi before reaching a final decision. Several prominent leaders from Rajasthan as well as national-level figures are believed to be under consideration for the party’s expected winning seat.

Party sources indicate that the final names may only be confirmed after the high command formally approves the panel. Internal consultations are continuing as the Congress seeks to select a candidate capable of maintaining the party’s position in the Upper House from Rajasthan.

Assembly Numbers Favour Existing Political Balance

Based on the current strength of political parties in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, political analysts believe the BJP is comfortably placed to secure two of the three Rajya Sabha seats. The Congress is also expected to retain one seat due to its existing numerical support in the Assembly.

Experts tracking Rajasthan politics say the election could eventually become an uncontested process if both major parties limit their nominations according to their expected seat share. In such a scenario, the BJP may avoid nominating a third candidate, while the Congress may choose not to field an additional contender beyond its likely winning seat.

Possibility of Unopposed Election Remains Open

Political observers note that uncontested Rajya Sabha elections are not uncommon when parties avoid unnecessary contests and align their nominations with legislative arithmetic. However, no formal confirmation has been made by either the BJP or Congress regarding the exact number of candidates they plan to field.

The final outcome will largely depend on political negotiations, candidate selection strategies, and decisions taken by party leaderships in the coming days. Until official announcements are made, discussions around possible nominees and electoral equations are expected to continue within both camps.

The Election Commission on Friday announced elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats across the country, including the three seats from Rajasthan that will go to polls next month.
