EducationBribery – Rajasthan University Officials Arrested in Examination Bribe Case

EducationBribery – Officials from Rajasthan’s Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested two faculty members of a private university in Tonk district after an alleged bribery transaction linked to student examination procedures was uncovered on Friday.

Rajasthan university bribery case

According to officials, the operation was carried out by the Tonk unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau under instructions issued by the Jaipur headquarters. The accused were identified as Dr. Meenu Gangal, serving as Associate Professor and Head of Department, and Ramesh Chand Meena, who was working as an Assistant Professor at Dr K.N. Modi University located on Banasthali Road in Niwai. Investigators alleged that the two were caught while accepting Rs 20,000 from a student enrolled in a Bachelor of Education programme.

Complaint Triggered Bureau Inquiry

The Anti-Corruption Bureau stated that the action followed a formal complaint submitted by a student pursuing the two-year B.Ed. course for the 2024–26 academic session. The complainant alleged that university officials had been repeatedly pressuring him and creating obstacles related to attendance and examination eligibility.

Senior ACB officials said the student informed authorities that the accused demanded money in exchange for resolving academic issues, including regularising attendance records, allowing him to sit for the main examination, and issuing the required admit card.

Director General of Police for the ACB, Govind Gupta, confirmed that the allegations were verified before any action was initiated. During the preliminary inquiry conducted on May 21, officials reportedly found that the accused repeated the demand for Rs 23,000 and assured the student that payment would clear the way for his examination process.

Trap Operation Conducted in Tonk

Following verification of the complaint, the Anti-Corruption Bureau organised a trap operation under the supervision of Narayan Togas, Deputy Inspector General of Police for the ACB’s Ajmer Range. The operation was led by Additional Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Meena from the Tonk unit.

Investigators alleged that during the operation, Dr. Meenu Gangal instructed co-accused Ramesh Chand Meena to receive the money inside her office chamber. Officials said the exchange took place in her presence.

The bureau further claimed that Ramesh Chand Meena accepted the cash from the complainant, counted the currency notes, and kept the amount in his trouser pocket. The marked currency was later recovered by the ACB team during the raid.

Both Accused Taken Into Custody

Authorities confirmed that both accused were arrested at the scene immediately after the alleged acceptance of the bribe amount. Officials stated that additional questioning and procedural formalities are continuing as part of the investigation.

The inquiry is currently being monitored by Smita Srivastava, Additional Director General of Police with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. Investigators are expected to examine whether similar complaints involving examination procedures or academic clearances had been reported earlier.

Corruption Charges Registered

The Anti-Corruption Bureau has registered a formal case against both accused under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials said further investigation will focus on gathering documentary evidence, verifying communication records, and examining the role of any additional persons connected to the matter.

The case has once again drawn attention to concerns surrounding academic administration and examination-related irregularities in educational institutions. Authorities have maintained that strict action will continue against public servants or institutional staff found misusing their positions for financial gain.

Officials have not yet disclosed whether the university administration plans to initiate separate disciplinary proceedings against the arrested faculty members. Further legal action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
