WarUpdate – Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Devastates Kyiv Overnight

WarUpdate –  Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine early Thursday, targeting the capital Kyiv and several other cities with drones and missiles in one of the most intense attacks in recent months. Ukrainian officials confirmed that at least one person was killed while 31 others suffered injuries as rescue teams continued searching through damaged buildings.

Kyiv Faces Heavy Destruction

According to Ukrainian authorities, Kyiv experienced the most severe impact during the coordinated strike. Multiple residential neighborhoods and civilian facilities were damaged after ballistic and cruise missiles, along with drones, struck several parts of the city before dawn.

Tymur Tkachenko, who heads Kyiv’s military administration, said destruction was reported across six districts. He stated that residential infrastructure suffered extensive damage as emergency crews rushed to affected locations throughout the morning.

One of the worst-hit areas was the Darnytsia district, where a section of a multi-story apartment building collapsed after being struck. Rescue workers managed to pull at least 27 people from the debris while continuing operations at the scene.

Emergency Teams Continue Rescue Operations

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 18 apartments were completely destroyed in the attack. He also said parts of the city’s left bank experienced disruptions to the water supply system following the strikes.

Firefighters, paramedics, and emergency responders remained at several damaged sites hours after the explosions. Smoke continued rising from the rubble while crews searched carefully for additional survivors trapped beneath collapsed concrete and debris.

Authorities also confirmed emergency operations in the Obolonskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, where additional damage was recorded.

In another incident, a drone reportedly struck the roof of a five-story residential building in the Dnieper district. Nearby structures in the Dniprovskyi area also sustained damage during the assault.

Residents Describe Moments of Fear

Local residents described scenes of panic as explosions echoed across Kyiv during the early hours of the morning. Seventy-eight-year-old resident Lyudmila Hlushko recalled waking up around 3 a.m. after hearing repeated blasts and the sound of missiles overhead.

She said the building shook violently moments later before windows shattered inside her home due to the force of the explosions. Many residents reportedly rushed to shelters as air raid sirens continued throughout the attack.

Multiple Ukrainian Cities Targeted

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko stated that the strikes were not limited to Kyiv. Several other cities, including Kremenchuk, Bila Tserkva, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Odesa, also came under attack during the coordinated operation.

Officials said Russia used a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones in the assault, increasing pressure on Ukraine’s air defense systems across different regions simultaneously.

The overnight bombardment followed another major Russian attack carried out earlier the same day. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that earlier assault involved nearly 800 drones and affected around 20 regions across the country. He described it as one of the longest and most widespread attacks since the war began.

According to Zelenskyy, the operation appeared designed to maximize destruction and psychological pressure on civilians.

Peace Efforts Remain Uncertain

The escalation comes at a time when international discussions about a possible ceasefire continue without visible progress. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump said he believed Russia and Ukraine could eventually reach an agreement to stop the fighting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also recently suggested that the conflict may be approaching its final stage. However, neither side has publicly outlined any concrete framework for negotiations or compromise.

Major disagreements remain unresolved, including the status of territories occupied by Russian forces and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Diplomatic initiatives led by the United States and other international partners over the past year have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.
