World Cup – London Sees Disorder After Morocco’s Quarterfinal Exit to France
World Cup – Moroccan football supporters gathered in large numbers on streets in northwest London after France defeated Morocco 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal on Thursday night.

Videos circulating from the area showed tense scenes involving members of the public and police officers. Smoke was visible in parts of the street, while rubbish and other debris appeared scattered across the road.
Police officers in protective equipment, including shields and body armour, were deployed as authorities sought to control the situation. Reports indicated that some people in the crowd confronted police and threw objects, while fireworks were also used during the disturbance.
The Metropolitan Police had not immediately released a full account of the number of people involved or whether arrests had been made. Emergency services were seen working in the area as officers attempted to restore normal movement.
Traffic Disrupted as Crowds Fill Streets
The gathering caused delays for motorists and public transport users in the Edgware Road area. Several supporters were seen standing near or on vehicles attempting to pass through the crowded streets.
Footage also showed a police officer receiving medical attention on the ground near two riot-control vehicles. Paramedics were present at the scene, although there was no immediate confirmation about the officer’s condition or the nature of any injuries.
The disorder followed an emotional night for Moroccan supporters, whose team had been eliminated by France in the quarterfinal stage. Morocco’s progress in the tournament had attracted significant support among football fans in London and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
France Maintains Major Security Presence
Attention had also focused on security arrangements in France before the match, particularly in Paris, where large post-match gatherings were anticipated.
According to a report by The Sun, more than 20,000 police officers were deployed across France on Thursday night. The report said about 8,000 officers were positioned in Paris as authorities prepared for possible crowd-related incidents following the World Cup fixture.
However, the most serious reported disruption after the match appeared to take place in London rather than the French capital. French authorities had increased their presence in key locations to manage crowds and reduce the risk of violence after the final whistle.

Police and emergency personnel remained active in northwest London as the situation developed. Authorities were working to clear roads, manage crowds and ensure the safety of residents, commuters and businesses in the area.
