Divorce – Sangeetha Withdraws Petition Against Vijay, Bringing Legal Case to a Close
Divorce –Sangeetha, the wife of actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has withdrawn the divorce petition she had filed against him, bringing the family court proceedings to an official end. The Chengalpattu Family Court closed the case on Friday after Sangeetha informed the court, through a video conference appearance, that she no longer wished to pursue the matter. Following a brief interaction with her, Judge Sujatha accepted the request and ordered the closure of the proceedings.
Court Accepts Withdrawal Request
The divorce case, which had remained under judicial consideration for several months, formally concluded after Sangeetha confirmed her decision before the court. During the hearing, the judge questioned her for around 15 minutes to ensure that the withdrawal was voluntary. After being satisfied with her response, the court accepted the request and dismissed the petition as withdrawn.
The legal proceedings had attracted considerable public attention because of Vijay’s position as both a leading actor and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Allegations Mentioned in the Original Petition
Sangeetha initially approached the court in February 2026 seeking dissolution of the marriage. In her petition, she alleged that Vijay had been involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. According to the court filing, she claimed she became aware of the alleged relationship in April 2021 and stated that the discovery caused significant emotional distress and damaged the trust within their marriage.
The petition further alleged that Vijay continued his association with the actress, which, according to Sangeetha, resulted in emotional hardship for her and embarrassment for their children. She also claimed that he had become emotionally distant over the years and that she experienced verbal disrespect and what was described in the filing as constructive desertion.
Proceedings Coincided With Election Season
The case first came up for hearing on February 26 before being postponed to April 20, just days ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Because the matter unfolded during the election campaign, it received attention beyond the legal sphere and became a subject of public and political discussion.
Despite the public interest surrounding the proceedings, the court continued to hear the matter under the established legal process until Sangeetha decided to withdraw the petition.
High Court Petition Had Raised Additional Questions
The family dispute also became part of a separate legal challenge before the Madras High Court concerning Vijay’s election affidavit. A voter from the Perambur constituency, identified as Venkatesh, questioned declarations made in the affidavit, including Vijay’s statement that he had extended a loan of Rs 12.60 crore to Sangeetha.
The petition also sought clarification regarding a disclosure involving Rs 20 crore reportedly provided to a private educational trust. However, the Madras High Court dismissed the plea in April, noting that another petition seeking similar relief had already been rejected earlier.
Vijay and Sangeetha’s Family Background
Vijay and Sangeetha first met in 1996. Sangeetha, who was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Britain, married Vijay after the couple registered their marriage in the United Kingdom in 1998. They later held a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in Chennai on August 25, 1999.
The couple have two children, a son named Jason and a daughter named Dhivya. With the withdrawal of the divorce petition, the legal proceedings that had drawn widespread public attention have now officially come to an end.
