Stock Market – Indian Benchmark Indices End Lower Amid Banking Sell-Off and Profit Booking

Stock Market – Indian equity markets ended the week on a subdued note as investors locked in profits after recent gains, while persistent selling in private banking and financial stocks weighed on overall sentiment.

Stock market banks profit booking

The benchmark indices finished in negative territory on Friday, reflecting cautious investor behaviour despite encouraging domestic corporate earnings. The BSE Sensex declined by 455.59 points, or 0.58 per cent, to settle at 78,499.17, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 65.35 points, or 0.27 per cent, closing at 24,570.65.

Banking Stocks Drag Market Lower

The weakness was largely driven by selling pressure in heavyweight private banking and financial companies, which offset gains seen in several other sectors during the week. Market participants also preferred to reduce exposure after the recent rally, resulting in broad-based profit booking across key counters.

According to market experts, the correction appears to be part of a healthy consolidation phase rather than a reversal in the broader trend. Analysts noted that as long as major technical support levels remain intact, the medium-term outlook continues to remain constructive.

Global Factors Keep Investors Cautious

Analysts pointed out that uncertainty surrounding geopolitical developments in the Middle East continues to influence global investor sentiment. The lack of a clear resolution has kept crude oil prices volatile, prompting investors to remain cautious while assessing potential risks to inflation and economic growth.

At the same time, market participants are closely watching upcoming US non-farm payroll data, which could provide fresh clues regarding the future direction of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. A softer US dollar has also supported demand for gold, with investors shifting towards traditional safe-haven assets.

During the latest trading session, Brent crude traded around USD 81.99 per barrel after easing by 0.60 per cent, while crude oil was quoted near USD 77.07, down 0.29 per cent. Gold, however, advanced strongly to around USD 4,308.18, gaining 1.61 per cent.

Strong Earnings Offer Domestic Support

Despite the market’s decline, analysts believe India’s earnings season continues to provide a positive backdrop for investors. Several leading companies have either met or exceeded market expectations, reinforcing confidence in selective sectors.

One of the notable highlights has been the strong financial performance of State Bank of India, supported by healthy credit expansion, improving asset quality and stable profit margins. The results have strengthened investor confidence in both the banking and PSU banking segments, which continue to provide important support to the broader market outlook.

Mixed Performance Across Global Markets

Asian markets delivered a mixed performance during the session. Japan’s Nikkei 225, South Korea’s KOSPI, Taiwan Weighted Index and GIFT Nifty all ended lower, reflecting cautious regional sentiment. In contrast, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, Singapore’s Straits Times and China’s Shanghai Composite posted gains, indicating selective buying across Asian equities.

Meanwhile, US market trends were also mixed. Dow Jones Futures traded slightly higher, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq edged lower, suggesting investors remained cautious ahead of key economic data releases.

Analysts Expect Trend to Remain Positive

Market observers believe the latest decline represents a normal pause after the recent upward movement rather than a major shift in sentiment. While higher crude oil prices and weakness in financial stocks continue to pose short-term challenges, stable corporate earnings and improving fundamentals are expected to support investor confidence.

Experts say market direction in the coming sessions will largely depend on global developments, movements in crude oil prices, US economic indicators and the continuation of healthy domestic earnings, all of which are likely to influence trading sentiment.
