Heatwave – Ahmedabad Braces for Rising Temperatures and Heat Alerts
Heatwave – Ahmedabad is preparing for an intense spell of summer heat over the coming days as temperatures across the city are expected to climb as high as 44 degrees Celsius. Weather officials have warned that the severe conditions may continue for nearly a week, prompting civic authorities to strengthen precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.

According to forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department, both Orange and Yellow heat alerts will remain active in the city until May 14. Officials stated that Yellow alerts are expected to continue from Friday through Monday and again until the morning of May 14. Orange alerts indicating stronger heatwave conditions are likely to remain in place until the mornings of May 11 and May 13.
Temperatures Expected to Stay Above Normal
Meteorologists have estimated that daytime temperatures may remain between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius throughout the forecast period. Night temperatures are also expected to stay unusually warm, hovering around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius, offering little relief after sunset.
The prolonged heat has raised concerns about public health, especially for people spending long hours outdoors. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Civic Body Marks Heat-Sensitive Areas
In response to the worsening conditions, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has identified 45 heat hotspots spread across the city. These areas were selected after analysing weather projections and local temperature trends across 17 wards located within six municipal zones.
Officials said the identified locations are expected to experience particularly high temperatures during the afternoon hours. The city administration has introduced a QR code-based information system that allows residents to check area-wise temperature forecasts and hotspot details.
The data will mainly focus on conditions between 12 noon and 5 p.m., the period considered most dangerous during a heatwave.
Residents Asked to Follow Safety Measures
Health and civic authorities have issued detailed advisories urging people to remain hydrated and take preventive steps against heat-related illnesses. Residents have been encouraged to carry drinking water while travelling and regularly consume fluids such as lemon water, buttermilk and coconut water.
The advisory also recommends including fresh fruits and vegetables in daily meals while avoiding stale food, overly spicy dishes and excessive intake of caffeinated or carbonated beverages.
People have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible between noon and 4 p.m. When stepping outside becomes necessary, officials suggest wearing loose cotton clothing in light colours and using protective items such as caps, scarves or umbrellas.
Extra Caution Recommended for Outdoor Workers
Authorities have also highlighted the risks faced by labourers and others working under direct sunlight. Employers and workers have been encouraged to take regular breaks and rest in shaded or cooler locations to reduce exposure to extreme heat.
Special attention has been requested for children, elderly citizens and pregnant women, who are considered more vulnerable during prolonged periods of high temperature.
Medical experts associated with the civic administration have warned people to watch for symptoms linked to heat exhaustion and heatstroke. These may include dizziness, headaches, unusual sweating, weakness, nausea, vomiting, dry or reddened skin and muscle pain.
Residents experiencing such symptoms have been advised to seek medical help without delay. In emergency situations, citizens have been asked to contact the 108 ambulance service for immediate assistance.
