Diplomacy – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar strengthened India’s diplomatic outreach during his visit to Suriname, where he engaged with the Indian-origin community and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to supporting the South American nation’s future development.

During an interaction with members of the Indian diaspora in Paramaribo, Jaishankar spoke about India’s rapid transformation across multiple sectors and stressed the importance of maintaining strong ties with overseas Indian communities. He noted that India intends to remain a dependable partner in Suriname’s journey toward economic growth and prosperity.
Focus on Shared Heritage and Cooperation
The minister described the relationship between India and Suriname as one built on deep historical links and strong people-to-people connections. Addressing community members, he highlighted how cultural bonds continue to play an important role in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
Jaishankar shared details of India’s ongoing progress in areas such as infrastructure, digital development, healthcare, and economic expansion. He also underlined India’s willingness to expand cooperation with Suriname in several strategic sectors.
Tribute to Fallen Heroes in Mariënburg
As part of his official engagements, the External Affairs Minister visited the Monument for the Fallen Heroes in Mariënburg. The memorial honours workers who lost their lives during the 1902 uprising at the Marienburg plantation under colonial rule.
Paying tribute at the site, Jaishankar said the sacrifices made by those workers continue to inspire struggles for justice and dignity around the world. He also acknowledged the courage of the Girmitya community, whose members travelled overseas as indentured labourers and endured difficult conditions while seeking freedom and respect.
The minister said the stories of these communities should continue to be remembered and shared across generations. According to him, their contribution forms an important chapter in the larger history of resistance against colonial oppression.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar participated in the 9th Joint Commission Meeting between India and Suriname held in Paramaribo. The minister also emphasised that strong friendships between nations are especially valuable during uncertain global conditions. He expressed confidence that the latest discussions would help strengthen the longstanding partnership between India and Suriname.
Meeting With Suriname President
Following the Joint Commission Meeting, Jaishankar met Suriname President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. During the interaction, he conveyed greetings from Indian leadership and reiterated India’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Suriname.
The visit forms part of Jaishankar’s wider Caribbean tour, which includes Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago between May 2 and May 10.
