Defence – PM Modi Marks Operation Sindoor Anniversary With Tribute Display

Defence – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday updated his profile picture on social media platform X to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, recognising the courage and commitment shown by the Indian armed forces during the military campaign launched after the Pahalgam terror attack.

The operation was initiated after the terror strike in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 people. In response, India carried out targeted military action against terror infrastructure located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Coordinated Military Action Across Terror Launchpads

Operation Sindoor, which began on May 7, 2025, focused on dismantling major terror facilities allegedly linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen. According to official statements, Indian forces targeted nine significant launchpads operating across Pakistan and PoJK during the mission.

Government sources had earlier stated that more than 100 terrorists were neutralised during the military action. The operation was described as one of the most coordinated cross-border responses undertaken by Indian forces in recent years.

Escalation Led to Brief Military Confrontation

Following India’s strikes, Pakistan responded with drone activity and cross-border shelling, triggering a short but intense military standoff between the two countries that continued for four days. During the confrontation, Indian defence systems reportedly intercepted multiple threats and carried out counterstrikes on strategic radar installations in Lahore and areas near Gujranwala.

The situation eventually de-escalated after communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both nations. A ceasefire understanding was reached on May 10, bringing an end to the hostilities.

Rajnath Singh Praises Armed Forces

Earlier on Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the armed forces on the operation’s anniversary. In a message shared on X, he praised the professionalism, discipline and coordination displayed by the Army, Navy and Air Force during the mission.

The Defence Minister said the operation demonstrated India’s preparedness to respond firmly whenever national security is threatened. He described Operation Sindoor as an example of modern military capability backed by strategic coordination among the armed forces.

According to his statement, the operation highlighted precision planning and operational synergy while reinforcing the country’s growing defence capabilities under the push for self-reliance in military production and preparedness.

Symbolic Tribute Draws Attention Online

Prime Minister Narendra Modi changing his display picture to “Operation Sindoor” quickly drew attention on social media, with several users viewing it as a symbolic gesture honouring the personnel involved in the operation. The move came as political leaders and defence officials across the country remembered the military action and the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.

Operation Sindoor continues to remain a significant chapter in India’s recent counterterrorism operations and is frequently cited by government leaders as an example of rapid military response and strategic coordination during periods of heightened security tensions.
