EducationQuota – More than 20,000 applications have been submitted across Tamil Nadu under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the 2026-27 academic session, highlighting growing interest among parents seeking admission for their children in private schools through the government-mandated reservation scheme.
Online Applications Continue Until May 18
Officials from the School Education Department confirmed that the online application process remains open until May 18 through the state’s official RTE admission portal. Authorities have urged parents to complete registrations within the deadline, as no offline applications will be accepted during the admission cycle.
The RTE Act requires all eligible private schools to allocate 25 per cent of seats at the entry level for children belonging to economically weaker families and disadvantaged communities. The reservation policy aims to improve access to quality education for students who may otherwise struggle to secure admission in private institutions.
Seat Availability Calculated Through EMIS Data
Education officials stated that the number of seats available under the quota in each participating school has been determined using student intake data available on the Education Management Information System (EMIS) portal. This process is intended to maintain accuracy and ensure that schools follow the reservation requirements prescribed under the law.
Authorities also noted that schools participating in the scheme have already displayed details related to RTE seat availability on their respective notice boards for public reference. Parents can review these details before completing the application process.
Verification and Lottery Process Scheduled
The School Education Department said document verification for submitted applications will continue until May 19. Parents will receive updates regarding verification status and further procedures through SMS notifications sent by the department.
To maintain transparency in admissions, the final selection process will be conducted through a lottery system on May 22. Government officials will oversee the draw process to ensure fairness in seat allotment across schools participating under the RTE category.
Admissions for students selected through the lottery are expected to be completed between May 25 and May 27, according to officials familiar with the schedule.
Schools Must Meet Government Approval Requirements
The department clarified that only private schools possessing valid recognition and necessary government approvals will be allowed to admit students under the RTE reservation quota. Officials said the measure is aimed at ensuring that beneficiaries receive education in institutions meeting required academic and administrative standards.
In addition, private schools have been directed to upload their fee structure information on the EMIS portal in compliance with the Tamil Nadu Schools Fee Regulation Act, 2009. Authorities believe this step will improve accountability and help maintain transparency regarding school fee practices.
Parents and Activists Welcome Higher Participation
Education activists and parent associations have welcomed the increasing number of applications received under the RTE scheme this year. Many believe the reservation policy continues to play an important role in helping children from financially weaker backgrounds gain access to established private schools across Tamil Nadu.
They also pointed out that awareness regarding the admission process has improved significantly in recent years, encouraging more families to apply through the online system. With thousands of seats expected to be filled under the scheme, the RTE initiative remains an important part of the state’s efforts to promote inclusive education opportunities.
