Development – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday visited the Nowshera sub-division in Rajouri district, where he unveiled two major development initiatives focused on improving medical services and strengthening road connectivity in this sensitive border area.

Expanded Hospital to Improve Medical Access

During his visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated the upgraded Sub-District Hospital in Nowshera, which has now been expanded into a 100-bed facility under its first phase of development. The expansion aims to ease pressure on existing healthcare services and ensure better treatment availability for residents living in remote and border-adjacent areas.

Officials highlighted that the hospital plays a crucial role due to Nowshera’s strategic location and its proximity to areas near the Line of Control, including Jhangar, Kalsian, Sariya, and Bawani. With a wide population spread across nearby blocks such as Seri, Lamberi, and Siot, the upgraded facility is expected to serve as a key medical centre for thousands of people who previously faced challenges accessing timely healthcare.

Road Project Brings Long-Awaited Connectivity

In addition to the healthcare upgrade, Abdullah also inaugurated a long-pending road project connecting National Highway-144 to Nowshera town through Rajal-Thatthi. This road had been awaited by residents for several years and is expected to significantly reduce travel difficulties in the region.

The new route is likely to enhance connectivity along the important Jammu-Poonch corridor, improving transportation for both civilians and essential services. Locals believe the project will boost economic activity and reduce travel time, especially in areas where infrastructure development has historically lagged.

Political Remarks at Public Gathering

Addressing a large gathering during the visit, the Chief Minister also spoke on political issues, raising concerns about pending commitments made by the central government. He stated that assurances regarding the restoration of statehood have yet to be fulfilled, despite repeated promises.

He further expressed apprehension over recent legislative developments, particularly those related to reservations. According to him, there are concerns that delimitation processes could be linked to such legislation, even though the relevant bill had already been passed in Parliament in 2023.

Regional Concerns and Public Response

On broader regional matters, Abdullah touched upon issues related to gas shortages, suggesting that disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia may gradually ease as the situation stabilises.

The event saw a strong public turnout, with thousands attending the rally and expressing support for the newly launched development projects. Residents welcomed the initiatives, particularly the improvements in healthcare and transport infrastructure, which are seen as critical for the region’s growth and stability.

Additional Announcements Strengthen Infrastructure

Further boosting development efforts, Health and Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced plans to establish a Degree College in the Seri block. This move is expected to improve access to higher education for students in the region, reducing the need to travel long distances.

Additionally, a new ambulance service was flagged off for the Nowshera hospital, aimed at strengthening emergency response capabilities and ensuring quicker medical assistance for patients in remote areas.

These combined initiatives signal a broader push to improve essential services in border districts, where infrastructure gaps have long posed challenges for local communities.
