Elections – Adhikari Alleges Fake Press Cards Used to Influence Polling

Elections –  Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing West Bengal Assembly, on Friday raised serious concerns about the conduct of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), alleging that party workers were being equipped with fabricated press identification cards. According to him, these cards were being used to gain unauthorized entry into polling stations and other restricted areas during the election process.

Allegations of Misuse of Media Identity

Adhikari claimed that individuals linked to the TMC were presenting themselves as journalists by using these alleged fake credentials. He suggested that such actions were not incidental but part of a coordinated effort to gain access to sensitive locations, including polling booths and administrative centers, where only authorized personnel are allowed.

He further stated that this access could be used to interfere with voters or influence the functioning of election officials. The use of media identity, he argued, provides a layer of protection that makes it easier for such individuals to operate without immediate scrutiny.

Claims of Organised Effort Involving Consultancy Firm

In his statement shared on social media, Adhikari also alleged that the issuance of these identification cards was being carried out with the involvement of a political consultancy firm, IPAC. He described the situation as a structured attempt to place individuals at key points during polling under the guise of journalists.

According to him, these so-called representatives of the press were strategically positioned to carry out activities that could potentially disrupt the fairness of the electoral process. He emphasized that the misuse of journalistic identity undermines both electoral integrity and the credibility of the media.

Call for Election Commission Intervention

Adhikari urged the Election Commission to take immediate action by verifying all press credentials issued recently across the state. He stressed that only individuals associated with recognized media organizations should be allowed near polling stations and other election-related facilities.

He called for strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure that no unauthorized person gains access under false pretenses. In his view, maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process requires thorough scrutiny of all personnel present at polling sites.

Political Tensions Escalate Ahead of Polling

The allegations come at a time when political tensions between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have intensified. Just a day earlier, the TMC had accused the BJP of violating the Model Code of Conduct. The ruling party alleged that the BJP had introduced a scheme named ‘Matrishakti Bhorsa Card’, which reportedly promised financial assistance to women voters.

The TMC described the initiative as an attempt to influence voters in the final phase before polling, labeling it as a form of electoral inducement. The party also claimed that forms related to the scheme were being distributed across various constituencies, raising concerns about fairness in the electoral process.

No Official Response Yet from TMC

As of now, the Trinamool Congress has not issued a formal response to Adhikari’s allegations regarding the alleged use of fake press identification cards. The absence of an immediate clarification has added to the ongoing political debate surrounding election practices in the state.

With both major parties exchanging accusations, the focus has shifted to the role of regulatory authorities in ensuring free and fair elections. Observers note that such claims, if proven, could have serious implications for electoral credibility and governance standards.

Growing Focus on Election Integrity

The developments highlight the increasing scrutiny on election-related activities and the importance of maintaining transparency at every stage. The Election Commission is expected to play a critical role in addressing these concerns and ensuring that established rules are followed strictly.

As polling approaches, the situation underscores the need for vigilance by both authorities and the public to safeguard democratic processes.
