V2V Communication – Every weekday morning, thousands of passengers pass through Mumbai’s crowded Dadar railway station, one of the busiest railway hubs in the country. During the rush hour, many travellers find it difficult to identify the correct platforms for trains heading towards destinations such as Virar, Borivali, and Churchgate. To make their journey easier, a local resident, Narendra Patil, has quietly taken on the responsibility of helping confused commuters by personally guiding them before beginning his own workday.

Mumbai Resident Becomes a Familiar Face for Daily Commuters

For nearly four years, Narendra Patil has been standing on the Dadar bridge between 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM on weekdays, assisting passengers who are uncertain about train routes and platforms. After completing this voluntary service, he travels to Mulund for his regular job.

According to regular commuters, Patil has become a dependable presence during the morning rush. His efforts have earned appreciation from passengers who frequently rely on his guidance while navigating the crowded station. Many have described him as a “human indicator” because he fills the information gap created by the absence of sufficient directional signage within the station.

Simple Initiative Helps Ease Peak-Hour Confusion

Dadar station handles an enormous volume of passengers every day, making platform changes and route identification challenging, particularly for first-time visitors and occasional travellers. Patil’s daily assistance has helped many commuters quickly locate the correct trains without unnecessary delays.

His voluntary work has continued consistently since 2022, reflecting a personal commitment to improving the travel experience for thousands of people who pass through one of Mumbai’s busiest transport centres each morning.

Government Proposes Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication Framework

Separately, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released a draft notification proposing amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, aimed at introducing a phased framework for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology across India.

The proposed system is designed to allow nearby vehicles to exchange real-time information such as speed, location, direction of travel, and acceleration. Officials believe this technology can significantly improve road safety by enabling vehicles to share critical information before dangerous situations develop.

Technology Designed to Deliver Early Safety Warnings

The Ministry explained that V2V communication could support drivers and vehicle systems by providing alerts in situations involving sudden braking, possible forward collisions, unsafe lane changes, and the movement of emergency vehicles.

Unlike conventional vehicle safety features that mainly depend on onboard sensors and driver response, the proposed communication system is capable of sharing information beyond the driver’s direct line of sight. This broader awareness is expected to complement Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and contribute to accident prevention through connected vehicle technology.

Technical Standards and Frequency Band Identified

Under the proposal, the Department of Telecommunications has exempted the 5.875 GHz to 5.925 GHz frequency band from licensing requirements through a notification issued on 10 June 2026. This frequency range has been identified for Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication and other Intelligent Transportation System applications.

The proposed AIS-230 standard establishes technical requirements for factory-installed On-Board Units based on Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology. These standards cover radio performance, frequency stability, transmission power, receiver sensitivity, Global Navigation Satellite System positioning, cybersecurity measures, electromagnetic compatibility, electrical performance, and road safety applications.

Framework Aims to Strengthen Connected Mobility

The Ministry noted that AIS-230 supports several important safety applications, including Emergency Brake Alert, Forward Collision Warning, Wrong-way Driving alerts, and Emergency Vehicle notifications.

Officials also highlighted that a dedicated Task Force had earlier recommended adopting the 5.9 GHz Intelligent Transportation System frequency range for road safety applications. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules-Technical Standing Committee later reviewed the development of AIS-230 during its 56th meeting on 7 May 2026, laying the technical groundwork for future implementation.

According to the Ministry, the proposed framework is expected to improve vehicle awareness, enable faster safety alerts, encourage connected mobility, and help reduce the risk of road accidents through advanced communication technologies.
