FuelSupply – Night-Time Fuel Sale Halt Imposed in Kolhapur
FuelSupply – Kolhapur is witnessing an unusual situation at fuel stations as authorities and petrol pump operators struggle to cope with a sudden spike in demand. In response to mounting pressure and crowd control challenges, fuel dealers in the city have decided to halt fuel sales during late-night hours. The restriction will remain in effect from 9 pm to 6 am, aiming to ease operational stress and restore order at petrol pumps.

Night Sales Suspended to Manage Crowds
The decision to suspend night-time fuel sales comes after days of chaotic scenes outside fuel stations. Operators reported difficulty in handling large crowds, especially during late hours, prompting a collective move to temporarily shut operations overnight. Despite this step, daytime demand continues to remain high, with many consumers still rushing to refill their vehicles.
Fuel rationing measures are already in place across the district. Two-wheeler users are currently allowed to purchase fuel worth up to Rs 200, while car and three-wheeler owners can buy up to Rs 2,000 per visit. These limits were introduced earlier to prevent hoarding and ensure fair distribution, but the impact has been limited due to sustained high demand.
Long Queues Continue Despite Restrictions
Even with control measures in place, several petrol pumps remained closed on Friday, further adding to public inconvenience. At operational stations, long queues formed early in the morning, reflecting ongoing anxiety among consumers.
While the situation has shown slight improvement compared to previous days, waiting times are still significant. Many motorists are spending between 30 minutes to an hour in queues before getting their turn. This has led to frustration among commuters, especially those dependent on daily travel for work and essential activities.
Financial Strain on Fuel Dealers
Apart from crowd management issues, petrol pump operators are also dealing with financial challenges linked to recent changes in supply terms. Dealers have reported that oil companies are now requiring advance payments—often amounting to several lakh rupees—for each tanker delivery.
Previously, fuel suppliers extended at least a one-day credit period, which allowed operators some flexibility in managing cash flow. However, the discontinuation of this credit facility has increased financial pressure on dealers, making it more difficult for them to maintain consistent supply during peak demand periods.
Administration Steps in with Purchase Restrictions
In an effort to stabilize the situation, district authorities have introduced additional restrictions. Kolhapur District Collector Amol Yedge has issued an order banning the sale of fuel in bulk through containers such as cans, bottles, or other storage units.
This directive is being strictly enforced at all petrol pumps across the district. Officials believe that restricting bulk purchases has helped curb panic buying to some extent and ensured that fuel is available for a larger number of consumers.
Slight Relief, But Concerns Remain
Authorities have acknowledged that these combined measures—rationing, bulk sale restrictions, and night-time closures—have begun to reduce pressure on fuel stations. However, the situation remains sensitive, and officials continue to monitor developments closely.
Residents are being urged to avoid unnecessary purchases and cooperate with regulations to ensure smooth distribution. While there are signs of gradual improvement, normalcy is yet to fully return, and fuel availability continues to be a matter of concern for both consumers and operators.
