Diplomacy – India and Ukraine Discuss Peace Efforts Amid Rising Conflict Tensions
Diplomacy – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held extensive discussions on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict during a meeting in Cyprus on Wednesday, focusing on recent battlefield developments and international efforts aimed at achieving a lasting peace settlement.

The talks took place during the informal gathering of European Union foreign ministers, widely known as the Gymnich Forum, where global security challenges and geopolitical developments were among the key issues under discussion.
Focus on War Developments and Peace Initiatives
After the meeting, Jaishankar described the interaction as constructive and said both sides exchanged perspectives on the continuing conflict in Ukraine. The ministers also reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between India and Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the conversation meaningful, stating that discussions covered Russia’s ongoing military operations and changing conditions on the battlefield. He highlighted what he described as Ukraine’s growing momentum in the conflict and stressed Kyiv’s commitment to ending the war through diplomatic means.
Sybiha also referred to recent large-scale attacks carried out by Russia, including strikes targeting Kyiv, and said such actions had not weakened Ukraine’s determination. According to him, Ukraine remains focused on securing a comprehensive and durable peace despite increasing military pressure.
Ukraine Seeks Wider International Support
During the talks, the Ukrainian side urged stronger international participation in peace-building efforts. Sybiha noted that Europe was increasing its responsibility in addressing the crisis and expressed hope that India would continue contributing its voice to diplomatic discussions surrounding the conflict.
The Ukrainian minister also underlined the importance of maintaining international dialogue at a time when geopolitical tensions continue to impact global stability. Both leaders reportedly agreed to remain in contact on matters of shared concern and continue diplomatic engagement in the future.
India Maintains Balanced Position
India has consistently maintained a carefully balanced approach toward the Russia-Ukraine conflict since the war began. New Delhi has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolution while continuing relations with both Moscow and Kyiv.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has on several occasions reiterated that the present time should not be viewed as an era of war. India has also supported initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging negotiations between the two sides.
India’s position has attracted international attention as several countries continue to seek broader diplomatic participation in efforts to end the conflict. New Delhi has maintained that direct communication and negotiations remain the only sustainable path toward peace.
Discussions Extend to West Asia and EU Cooperation
Apart from his meeting with the Ukrainian foreign minister, Jaishankar also held separate discussions with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud regarding the changing situation in West Asia.
The Indian minister additionally met European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to review India-EU cooperation and regional developments affecting global security and economic stability.
Jaishankar arrived in Cyprus earlier in the day to participate in the Gymnich meeting, an informal forum that brings together European Union foreign ministers to discuss strategic and foreign policy matters affecting Europe and neighboring regions.
In a social media message shared after his arrival, Jaishankar thanked Kaja Kallas and Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos for inviting India to participate in the discussions.
