Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan described India’s handloom tradition as a priceless heritage that continues to thrive through the dedication, creativity and perseverance of skilled artisans. In a message shared on X, he said every handwoven fabric reflects the country’s rich cultural values and the enduring craftsmanship passed down through generations.
He also noted that the handloom sector plays a significant role in creating sustainable employment opportunities, particularly in rural regions. Encouraging citizens to support local artisans, the Vice President urged people to choose handloom products and strengthen the vision of Vocal for Local and an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Amit Shah Recalls Handloom’s Link with Freedom Movement
Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended his greetings on National Handloom Day and highlighted the historical importance of India’s handloom industry. He said the sector was closely connected to the country’s freedom struggle and continues to represent India’s cultural diversity and traditional excellence.
In his message, Shah said the observance of National Handloom Day was introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to preserve the country’s weaving traditions while giving fresh momentum to the industry. He added that government initiatives, including domestic support and expanding access to international markets through trade agreements, have opened new opportunities for weavers. He also appealed to citizens to include handloom products in their everyday lives as a way of strengthening the sector.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also conveyed his greetings to weavers, artisans and the people of the state. He praised those engaged in the traditional craft for keeping India’s cultural heritage alive and contributing to the country’s journey from Vocal for Local to Local to Global.
The Chief Minister described handloom as a symbol of India’s creativity, skilled craftsmanship and self-reliance. He encouraged people to adopt Swadeshi products, saying greater public participation in supporting indigenous goods would further strengthen the vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat while boosting the country’s traditional industries.

National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, a landmark moment in India’s freedom movement that encouraged the use of indigenous products.
