SecurityOperations – Jharkhand Forces Intensify Final Crackdown in Saranda Forest

SecurityOperations –  Security forces in Jharkhand have significantly intensified their campaign against Maoist insurgents in the Saranda forest region of West Singhbhum, deploying nearly 10,000 personnel in an effort to dismantle the last active rebel network in the area. Officials say the operation has entered a decisive stage following the recent surrender of several Maoist cadres.

Massive Security Deployment Across Saranda

Authorities have confirmed that around 25 Maoists recently surrendered before security agencies, but operations in the dense Saranda forest have not slowed down. Police officials believe nearly 20 to 25 armed rebels are still attempting to evade capture in the region’s difficult terrain.

To strengthen the mission, five companies of the Jharkhand Armed Police, including units from the Gorkha Battalion, have been stationed in the forest zone. One company of the Jharkhand Jaguars has also joined the operation. The campaign is being carried out jointly by the Chaibasa Police, CRPF units, COBRA battalions, Jharkhand Jaguars, and JAP personnel.

Wanted Maoist Leaders Under Surveillance

Senior police officers said many of the remaining insurgents are wanted in multiple cases and include several high-ranking Maoist leaders. Among them are two key commanders carrying rewards of Rs 1 crore each.

According to officials, the remaining group has become increasingly isolated after the recent wave of surrenders. However, intelligence agencies believe they are still armed and trying to move through remote forest routes to avoid direct confrontation with security forces.

Jharkhand Police Inspector General (Operations) Narendra Singh stated that forces have tightened surveillance and sealed several suspected hideouts. He added that the ongoing operations are focused on locating nearly 15 highly wanted Maoists believed to be operating inside Saranda and adjoining Kolhan forest areas.

Intelligence Network Strengthened

Police sources said security agencies have collected detailed intelligence regarding the movement patterns, weapons stock, and support networks linked to the remaining Maoist members. Authorities are also monitoring possible escape routes that could be used to cross into neighboring regions.

Officials revealed that six of the wanted Maoists currently hiding in the Saranda zone are from states outside Jharkhand. The cross-border connections have prompted agencies to strengthen coordination with neighboring state police units.

Security personnel are conducting continuous search operations in the forest belt, with teams carrying out patrols and area domination exercises in sensitive pockets. Authorities believe the pressure created by sustained operations has weakened the operational capacity of Maoist groups in the region.

Maoist Presence Faces Major Decline

The Saranda forest has long been considered one of the strongest Maoist strongholds in eastern India. However, officials say the situation has changed significantly over the past year due to intensified anti-insurgency operations and repeated encounters.

Police records indicate that 22 Maoists have been killed in encounters across Jharkhand in 2026 so far, with the highest number reported from the Saranda region. In one major encounter earlier this year, 17 insurgents were killed during an exchange of fire with security personnel.

Authorities believe the recent surrender of 25 cadres has dealt another major setback to Maoist activities in the area. Senior officers have urged the remaining rebels to surrender and join the rehabilitation process instead of continuing armed resistance.

Officials maintain that operations will continue until the remaining insurgent network in Saranda is completely dismantled and the region is declared free from Maoist influence.
