Airport – Noida International Airport Phase I Inauguration Set for March 28
Airport – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Uttar Pradesh on March 28 to officially launch the first phase of the Noida International Airport, marking a key development in the country’s expanding aviation network.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to inspect the newly constructed terminal at Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar before formally inaugurating the airport around noon. The event will also include an address to the public, highlighting the project’s significance for the region and the nation.
Major Step in Strengthening Aviation Network
The opening of Noida International Airport is being seen as an important milestone in India’s ambition to strengthen its position in global aviation. Planned as a major international gateway for the National Capital Region (NCR), the airport is expected to significantly improve both domestic and international connectivity.
This new facility will operate alongside Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, forming a dual-airport system for the NCR. The combined capacity of these airports is expected to reduce congestion, improve passenger handling efficiency, and support the region’s growing travel demand.
Investment and Development Details
The first phase of the project has been developed with an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crore under a Public-Private Partnership model. As one of the country’s largest greenfield airport projects, it reflects the government’s focus on infrastructure-led growth.
In its initial stage, the airport will be capable of handling around 12 million passengers annually. With future expansion plans already in place, this capacity is expected to increase significantly, eventually reaching up to 70 million passengers per year.
Advanced Infrastructure and Facilities
The airport has been equipped with a 3,900-meter runway designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft. It also includes modern navigation systems such as the Instrument Landing System and advanced lighting, ensuring safe and efficient operations in all weather conditions.
Beyond passenger services, the airport is being developed as a comprehensive logistics hub. It will feature an integrated cargo terminal along with dedicated logistics zones. The cargo handling capacity is projected to exceed 2.5 lakh metric tonnes annually in the initial phase, with the potential to expand to nearly 18 lakh metric tonnes in the future.
Additionally, a 40-acre Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility has been planned, which is expected to support aircraft servicing needs and generate employment opportunities in the aviation sector.
Focus on Sustainability and Design
A key highlight of the Noida International Airport project is its emphasis on sustainability. The airport is designed to operate as a net-zero emissions facility, incorporating energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible practices.
Architecturally, the design blends modern infrastructure with elements inspired by traditional Indian structures such as ghats and havelis. This approach aims to create a unique identity while maintaining functionality and efficiency.
Strategic Connectivity and Location Advantage
Located along the Yamuna Expressway, the airport is positioned to serve as a multi-modal transport hub. It is planned to be seamlessly connected through road networks, rail lines, metro services, and regional transit systems.
This integrated connectivity is expected to improve accessibility for passengers while also supporting faster movement of cargo. The airport’s strategic location is likely to boost economic activity in surrounding regions and contribute to overall regional development.
