Mangoes – Indian Varieties Spark Strong Demand Across US Retail Markets

Mangoes –  Indian mangoes are becoming one of the most sought-after seasonal fruits in the United States, with consumers rushing to stores to purchase popular varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, and Dussehri. Retailers in several American cities have reported rapid sales, highlighting the growing popularity of Indian agricultural products among both Indian-origin families and local consumers.

Rising Popularity Beyond the Indian Community

The increasing demand reflects a combination of cultural connection and expanding interest in international fruit varieties. According to India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, mangoes have long held a special place among members of the Indian diaspora who associate the fruit with childhood summers and family gatherings in India.

For many years, Indian Americans returning from visits to India often spoke fondly of enjoying fresh mangoes during the summer season. Today, those same varieties are becoming more accessible through major American retail chains, allowing consumers to experience authentic Indian mangoes without leaving the country.

Promotional Events Boost Awareness

Interest in Indian mangoes received an additional boost through promotional initiatives organized by Indian diplomatic missions in the United States. One such event, titled “Mango Magic,” was recently held in Seattle by the Consulate General of India.

The tasting and promotional program attracted more than 100 participants, including importers, distributors, retail executives, and representatives from large retail companies. Visitors were offered samples of several well-known mango varieties sourced from different regions of India.

The showcased selection included Alphonso and Kesar from Maharashtra, Banganpalli and Himayat from Andhra Pradesh, Langra and Dussehri from Uttar Pradesh, and Rajapuri from Gujarat. The event was organized in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Retail Stores Report Immediate Sell-Outs

The strongest indication of growing consumer interest came from major retail outlets. Earlier this year, Costco introduced a shipment of Indian Kesar mangoes to selected stores in Greater Seattle, Las Vegas, New Jersey, and Greater Los Angeles.

Retail representatives reported that available stock sold out within a very short period after reaching store shelves. Such rapid sales have become a recurring trend whenever Indian mangoes arrive at participating locations.

Customers have increasingly turned to social media platforms to share updates on mango availability. Shoppers frequently post photographs of newly arrived stock and encourage others to visit stores quickly before supplies run out. Many consumers have praised the fruit for its distinctive sweetness, aroma, and flavor profile.

American Consumers Embrace Indian Produce

Officials say enthusiasm for Indian mangoes is no longer limited to the Indian-origin population. Feedback from government officials, policymakers, and American consumers has been overwhelmingly positive.

According to Ambassador Kwatra, many people who sampled the fruit for the first time described it as among the best mangoes they had ever tasted. Such reactions indicate a broader acceptance of Indian produce in international markets and suggest significant growth potential in the years ahead.

Export Opportunities Continue to Expand

India remains the world’s largest mango producer, generating more than 26 million metric tonnes annually and cultivating over a thousand recognized varieties. Since exports to the United States resumed in 2007 following a lengthy suspension, shipments have steadily increased.

Trade figures show that Indian mango exports to the US reached approximately $10 million during the 2023-24 financial year, representing a substantial increase from the previous year. Industry experts believe the expanding American mango market, which surpassed $1 billion in value during 2025, presents significant opportunities for Indian exporters.

As awareness grows and consumer demand strengthens, exporters are increasingly focused on introducing a wider range of regional Indian mango varieties to American households, further strengthening agricultural trade ties between the two countries.
