Parliament – Lok Sabha Witnesses Heated Clash During Debate on Anti-Paper Leak Bill
Parliament – The Lok Sabha witnessed intense scenes on Wednesday as a prolonged discussion on the anti-paper leak bill turned into a fierce political confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition. The disruption followed remarks made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who criticised the handling of student protests, questioned the role of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the education system, and levelled serious allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Opposition Raises Concerns During Debate
While taking part in the debate, Rahul Gandhi referred to recent student demonstrations and alleged police action in the national capital. He claimed that excessive force had been used against protesting students and accused the Home Minister of being responsible for authorising the police response, including the reported use of pellet guns. His remarks immediately drew strong objections from members of the treasury benches.
The Congress leader also criticised what he described as growing influence of the RSS in India’s education system. During his speech, he made sharp comments that further escalated tensions inside the House, prompting repeated interruptions from ruling party lawmakers.
Government Demands Evidence for Allegations
Responding on behalf of the government, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly rejected Rahul Gandhi’s allegations. He questioned the basis of the claims and insisted that such serious accusations should not be made without supporting evidence.
Rijiju argued that the Leader of Opposition held a constitutional responsibility and should substantiate his statements made inside Parliament. He urged the Speaker to remove the disputed remarks from the official proceedings and maintained that making allegations against the Home Minister without proof was unacceptable.
The minister also called on Rahul Gandhi to apologise before the House, stating that the comments amounted to an irresponsible allegation and did not reflect the standards expected from the Leader of Opposition.
Treasury Benches Register Strong Protest
As the exchange intensified, BJP members repeatedly interrupted the proceedings and demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi. Treasury bench MPs described the allegations as baseless and objected to the assertion that the Home Minister had ordered police firing on students.
Despite the criticism, Gandhi maintained his position during the debate. He argued that actions taken during such police operations ultimately fell under the responsibility of the Union Home Minister, a response that further fuelled the confrontation between the government and the Opposition.
House Proceedings Disrupted by Continuous Uproar
The disagreement soon developed into loud slogan-shouting and heated verbal exchanges across the House. Members from both sides continued to protest, making it difficult for normal legislative business to proceed.
With repeated interruptions preventing the debate from continuing in an orderly manner, the Speaker intervened to restore calm. However, as neither side showed signs of backing down, the disruption continued for several minutes.
Speaker Adjourns Lok Sabha Amid Deadlock
As the standoff persisted, the Speaker adjourned the Lok Sabha for 30 minutes to allow tempers to cool. The adjournment temporarily halted proceedings, bringing an abrupt pause to the discussion on the anti-paper leak bill.
The episode highlighted the deep political divisions between the government and the Opposition over issues related to student protests, policing, and parliamentary conduct. While the legislative discussion had begun with the proposed anti-paper leak legislation, the debate ultimately shifted focus to the controversy surrounding Rahul Gandhi’s remarks and the government’s demand for evidence and an apology.
