Politics – Opposition Leaders Raise Concerns Over Reported TMC Split

Politics – Fresh political developments in West Bengal have sparked debate across the national political landscape after reports emerged that a group of Trinamool Congress (TMC) Members of Parliament may be considering support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The situation has drawn sharp reactions from opposition leaders, who have questioned the circumstances surrounding the reported shift.

Congress Alleges Pressure on Opposition Parties

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal criticized the BJP, alleging that the ruling party has adopted methods aimed at weakening opposition organizations in different states. Speaking on the issue, he claimed that similar political developments had previously been witnessed in Maharashtra and are now being seen in West Bengal.

Venugopal further alleged that central institutions and constitutional bodies were being used to strengthen the ruling party’s position. According to him, efforts are being made not only to secure political power but also to reduce the strength of rival parties. He maintained that such actions would eventually face public and political scrutiny.

Reports Suggest Support From TMC MPs

The controversy intensified after reports indicated that nearly 20 TMC Members of Parliament had expressed their willingness to support the NDA. The reported move has the potential to influence both West Bengal politics and the balance of power in Parliament.

TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who has been identified among the dissident leaders, confirmed the development. She stated that a group of MPs had formally communicated their position to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The reported communication signaled a possible departure from the party’s existing political direction and raised questions about future alignments within the state.

AAP Leader Criticizes Political Defections

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh also reacted strongly to the reports. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of encouraging political defections that weaken opposition parties. Singh argued that similar political strategies had been used in several states and claimed that the latest developments reflected a broader trend.

According to Singh, elected representatives who secured victory under a particular party banner should not switch allegiance without first seeking a fresh mandate from voters. He expressed concern that such moves could undermine democratic principles and voter trust.

Call for Resignations Before Switching Sides

Expanding on his criticism, Singh said that lawmakers who won elections on the TMC symbol should resign before joining another political formation. He emphasized that voters had elected them based on the leadership and policies of the Trinamool Congress.

The AAP leader maintained that changing political affiliations without resigning from elected positions raises questions about accountability. He argued that representatives should return to the electorate if they wish to contest under a different political platform.

Political Uncertainty Following Election Defeat

The latest developments come at a time when the Trinamool Congress is facing internal challenges following its defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The outcome resulted in the formation of the state’s first BJP-led government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Political observers believe the situation could have significant implications for both state and national politics in the coming months. As discussions continue and party leaders respond to the reports, attention remains focused on whether the reported shift among TMC lawmakers will translate into a formal political realignment.
