Politics – Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday firmly dismissed allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had suggested links between Gogoi, his wife, and Pakistan. Responding to the claims, the Jorhat MP described them as unfounded and said they existed only as an “imaginary theory” without any factual basis.
Strong Response to Allegations
In a conversation with PTI, Gogoi drew a sharp distinction between the accusations made against him and the criticisms he has raised against the state government. He emphasized that while the allegations against him involve sensitive national security concerns, they lack any credible evidence.
Gogoi stated that his own criticism of the chief minister is based on issues such as alleged corruption, financial irregularities, and the use of government machinery for personal or family benefit. According to him, these matters are supported by publicly available information, media reports, and ongoing legal proceedings.
Concerns Over Use of National Security Narrative
Highlighting the seriousness of national security, Gogoi expressed concern over what he described as the casual use of such sensitive topics for political purposes. He argued that making unverified claims related to national security could undermine public trust and distract from genuine issues.
He further added that leaders in responsible positions should approach such matters with caution and seriousness, rather than turning them into tools for political confrontation.
Political Motive Behind Claims
Gogoi suggested that the allegations may be politically driven and reflective of deeper insecurities within the ruling establishment. He claimed that such statements indicate a willingness to go to extreme lengths to target political opponents.
The controversy has intensified following the chief minister’s decision to order a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged links involving Gogoi and his wife. Despite this, the Congress leader maintained that the claims remain baseless and lack substance.
Family Stands Firm Amid Controversy
Addressing the personal impact of the allegations, Gogoi said his family has handled the situation with resilience. He noted that his wife has shown strength in the face of public scrutiny and that the experience has reinforced their shared values and commitment.
He indicated that such attacks, rather than weakening them, have strengthened their resolve to continue their political and public engagement.
Allegations Against State Government
Shifting focus, Gogoi accused the Assam government of avoiding accountability on key issues, including the alleged misuse of public resources. He also criticized what he described as a climate of fear and intimidation, where individuals questioning the government face administrative or legal challenges.
According to him, this approach does not align with democratic principles and raises concerns about governance and transparency in the state.
Electoral Outlook and Opposition Strategy
Looking ahead, Gogoi expressed confidence that voters would evaluate political parties based on integrity and courage. He also referred to the legacy of his father, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, stating that many people recall a period marked by stability and peace during his tenure.
He outlined the Congress party’s intention to present a governance model focused on practical solutions, economic development, and improved administration.
Formation of Broad Opposition Alliance
Gogoi also welcomed the formation of a six-party opposition alliance in Assam, which includes Congress along with regional and Left parties. He described the coalition as a unique and inclusive political arrangement that brings together diverse ideological groups.
While acknowledging that negotiations over seat-sharing and coordination required time, he expressed satisfaction with the final outcome. He said the alliance has received a positive response from the public, with growing interest in an alternative political platform.
According to Gogoi, the coalition reflects a broader effort to unite different political forces and respond to public expectations for change in the state’s governance.
