Rajya Sabha – RJD Empowers Lalu, Tejashwi on Candidates
Rajya Sabha – The Rashtriya Janata Dal has handed over full authority to its chief Lalu Prasad and national working president Tejashwi Prasad Yadav to take the final call on candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Bihar.

Decision Taken at Key Party Meeting
The decision was reached during a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board held at Tejashwi Yadav’s official residence in Patna on Sunday. Senior leaders of the RJD were present at the discussion, which focused on strategy for the five Rajya Sabha seats that are set to fall vacant in the state.
Lalu Prasad, who is currently in New Delhi, joined the deliberations through video conferencing. Party insiders described the meeting as crucial, as it formally entrusted the top leadership with the responsibility of deciding nominees without further internal consultations.
Political Arithmetic Favors NDA
The upcoming election is shaped largely by numbers in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. The National Democratic Alliance currently commands the support of 202 MLAs. This majority gives both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United) a comfortable path to secure two Rajya Sabha seats each.
With four seats widely expected to go to the NDA bloc, attention has turned to the fifth seat. The RJD, as the principal opposition party in the state, is positioning itself to capture that remaining berth. The party’s internal discussions are believed to have centered on identifying a candidate who can consolidate support and avoid any last-minute cross-voting.
Speculation Around Possible Nominees
Even as the party leadership has not announced any names, speculation has intensified in political circles. Some reports suggest that Tejashwi Yadav himself could enter the fray from Bihar. However, no official confirmation has been made.
Another name circulating in sections of the media is Hena Shahab, the wife of the late Mohammad Shahabuddin, a former RJD Member of Parliament from Siwan. Shahabuddin had a significant political presence in the region, and discussions about her potential candidature have drawn attention, though party leaders have refrained from commenting publicly on these reports.
Timeline for Filing Nominations
The Election Commission has set March 5 as the final date for filing nominations for the five vacant seats. If the number of candidates exceeds the available positions, polling will be conducted on March 16.
Rajya Sabha elections are typically decided by the strength of parties in the respective state assemblies. Members of the Legislative Assembly cast their votes under a proportional representation system using the single transferable vote method. In situations where the number of candidates matches the number of seats, elections may be declared uncontested.
Strategic Importance for RJD
For the RJD, securing the fifth seat would strengthen its representation in the Upper House of Parliament and reinforce its political standing ahead of future electoral contests in Bihar. The party leadership’s move to centralize decision-making reflects the importance it attaches to the upcoming election.
While the NDA’s numerical advantage makes four seats appear settled, the contest for the remaining berth has added an element of political interest. Observers note that candidate selection will be critical, especially in ensuring party unity and avoiding any unexpected outcomes.
As the nomination deadline approaches, all eyes remain on the RJD leadership to announce its final choice. The coming days are expected to bring clarity on who will represent the party in the Rajya Sabha from Bihar.
