Vrindavani Vastra – Guwahati to Host Museum for Sacred Textile
Vrindavani Vastra – Guwahati is set to witness the construction of a dedicated cultural museum that will showcase the historic Vrindavani Vastra, one of Assam’s most treasured textiles. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently laid the foundation stone for the project, describing it as a significant step toward preserving and celebrating the state’s artistic and spiritual legacy.

A Textile Rooted in Assam’s Spiritual History
The Vrindavani Vastra is widely regarded as an exceptional example of Assamese silk craftsmanship. Created under the guidance of 15th–16th century saint and social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, the textile features intricate depictions from the life of Lord Krishna. Scholars believe that portions of the fabric were taken to Tibet between the 17th and 18th centuries, adding to its historical journey beyond India’s borders.
The upcoming museum in Guwahati aims to provide a permanent home for this masterpiece, allowing visitors to explore its artistic details and historical context. Officials say the facility will not only exhibit the textile but also present interpretative displays to help younger generations understand its cultural importance.
Last year, the Assam government signed a Letter of Intent with the London-based British Museum to facilitate the return of the Vrindavani Vastra to India. The move was widely seen as an important effort to reconnect Assam with a vital part of its civilisational history. The museum project is expected to complement these efforts by creating an appropriate space for its preservation and public display.
Railway Stations Recognised for Food Safety Standards
In another development, the Northeast Frontier Railway has received recognition for improving food safety practices across several of its stations. Dimapur, Kokrajhar, Golakganj, Alipurduar and New Mal Junction railway stations have earned the “Eat Right Station” certification from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.
The certification is awarded to railway stations that comply with prescribed benchmarks related to hygiene, food handling, and overall safety standards. The evaluation process includes inspection of food stalls, storage facilities, waste management systems, and adherence to cleanliness norms.
The “Eat Right Station” initiative forms part of a nationwide programme launched by FSSAI to encourage safe and sustainable food practices in public spaces. Railway authorities stated that the recognition reflects sustained efforts to improve passenger services and maintain high standards in food distribution areas. Officials added that periodic audits and continued monitoring will remain in place to ensure compliance with guidelines.
HDFC Bank Opens First Tech and Digital Factory in Assam
Assam has also marked a milestone in the financial technology sector with the launch of the state’s first Tech and Digital Factory by HDFC Bank in Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility in the presence of senior officials from the bank.
The new centre is designed to focus on advanced technology development, innovation, and skill-building in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital banking solutions, and cybersecurity. According to the bank, the Guwahati facility will help strengthen its technology infrastructure while nurturing local talent.
HDFC Bank already operates similar Tech and Digital Factories in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram. The addition of Guwahati to this network is expected to create employment opportunities for skilled professionals in Assam and neighbouring states. Industry observers believe the move could contribute to positioning Guwahati as an emerging technology hub in the Northeast region.
State officials highlighted that such investments are aligned with broader efforts to attract technology-driven enterprises and expand digital infrastructure in Assam. The initiative is also expected to encourage collaboration between industry and local educational institutions to develop specialised skill sets.
Together, these developments reflect Assam’s dual focus on safeguarding its cultural heritage while advancing infrastructure and technology. From preserving a centuries-old textile tradition to modernising railway services and expanding digital innovation, the state continues to balance tradition with progress.
