Murder – Woman Shot Dead in Hoshiarpur Village Attack
Murder – A 62-year-old woman was shot dead on Saturday morning in a village in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, sending shockwaves through the local community. Police said the assailant, who was riding a motorcycle, opened fire on the woman as she was returning home from a nearby place of worship. Authorities have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage to identify the attacker.
Attack Occurred Near Religious Site
The incident took place in Mehandwani Gujran village, where the victim had gone to pay obeisance at Bhuri Walean Di Kutia earlier in the morning. According to police officials, she was on her way back home when a man on a motorcycle approached her and fired several shots.
Residents in the area reported hearing gunfire, after which the attacker quickly fled the scene on his bike. The woman sustained critical injuries in the attack. Locals rushed to help and arrangements were made to transport her to the nearest civil hospital.
Victim Succumbed to Injuries
Despite efforts to save her, the woman succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital, police confirmed. Her death has left family members and villagers in mourning.
The deceased was the wife of Sham Lal, a retired assistant sub-inspector with the Punjab Police. Her husband had previously served in the force and retired after years of service. The family is said to be deeply distressed by the sudden and violent loss.
Police officials reached the scene soon after receiving information about the shooting. A forensic team was also called to collect evidence from the spot. The area was briefly cordoned off as part of the preliminary investigation.
CCTV Footage Under Review
Deputy Superintendent of Police Daljit Singh Khakh stated that investigators are closely examining CCTV camera recordings from the surrounding areas. The aim is to trace the route taken by the suspect before and after the attack and to identify the motorcycle used in the crime.
“We are scanning available footage and gathering technical evidence to identify and apprehend the accused,” the officer said. He added that several teams have been formed to work on different aspects of the case.
Police are also questioning residents and collecting statements from potential witnesses who may have seen the attacker or noticed suspicious activity in the area.
Motive Yet to Be Determined
At this stage, authorities have not established the motive behind the killing. Officials clarified that no evidence has emerged so far linking the crime to any known gangster activity.
