As part of the divorce settlements with Bugra, Ezgi was given custody of the two dogs. The spouse later consented to provide the funding necessary to maintain the cats’ health and well-being, making a donation every three months for the next ten years.

After a divorce, a man pays for the upkeep of his cat.

Food, immunizations, medical requirements, and other care facilities will all be covered by these payments throughout the course of the next ten years. According to the story, the man’s donations to cat support will be updated for inflation and will stop when the two cats pass away.

Based on medical estimates of a cat’s typical lifetime of 15 years, the sum of more than Rs 21,000 each three months was calculated. The court decided that in addition to the pet support, Bugra would also be required to compensate Ezgi with 550,000 liras, or around Rs 1,156,320. Those watching the case were surprised to see that the guy was being asked to take care of his wife’s pets, even though alimony and divorce payments are customary.

Turkish Animal Laws Are Highlighted in This Case

The spouse was subject to the court’s enforcement of Turkey’s strict animal protection rules, which define pets as “living beings” as opposed to property. Aylin Esra Eren, a legal expert, told news source Yenisafak that in order to provide the greatest care, pets in Turkey are registered by microchipping, and the law designates their owner as a legal guardian.

Pet abandonment is prohibited in Turkey and is seen as a moral and legal transgression. People who are caught leaving animals behind risk penalties of up to 60,000 liras, or around Rs 126,264. “It is against the law to leave microchipped pets on the streets, and poorly cared-for pets will end up as strays,” Eren said.

The legal expert claims that the Bugra and Ezgi case was a major step toward the country’s animal legislation strengthening, tying pet care to divorce processes and providing compensation.
