HyderabadClash –Political tensions spilled onto the streets of Hyderabad on Wednesday as workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress clashed during rival demonstrations linked to the previous day’s events in New Delhi. The confrontation, which took place near the BJP’s state headquarters in the Nampally area, resulted in injuries to several party workers as well as a policewoman. Authorities stepped in to bring the situation under control, while traffic across several key roads in the city was severely affected.
Rival Demonstrations Trigger Confrontation
The unrest began after BJP leaders and supporters assembled outside the party’s Telangana headquarters to protest what they described as a security breach involving Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during Tuesday’s demonstration near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi. The national protest had been organised by Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders against police action taken during demonstrations over the alleged NEET paper leak issue.
At the same time, Congress workers gathered outside the BJP office to protest the detention of Rahul Gandhi and several opposition leaders during the Delhi demonstration. As supporters from both parties converged in the same area, the atmosphere quickly turned tense.
Violence Erupts Despite Police Presence
The situation escalated when workers from both sides allegedly began hurling stones and using sticks during the confrontation. Police personnel stationed at the location attempted to separate the rival groups, but several individuals sustained injuries before the violence was brought under control. A woman police officer was also reportedly injured while trying to manage the crowd.
The clash created panic in the vicinity of the Telangana BJP headquarters and the nearby Congress office, Gandhi Bhavan, prompting authorities to increase security deployment in the area.
BJP Leaders Detained During Protest
Earlier in the day, BJP supporters had gathered in large numbers before marching towards Gandhi Bhavan as part of their protest. During the procession, some Congress party banners and flex boards were reportedly damaged.
Police intervened to prevent the march from escalating and detained Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao along with several senior party leaders. They were taken to Goshamahal Police Station as a precautionary measure to maintain public order.
Congress Protest Reaches BJP Headquarters
Later, Congress workers, accompanied by members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), marched towards the BJP office. Led by MLC Balmori Venkat, the protesters attempted to surround the BJP headquarters while raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
As BJP supporters gathered in response, both groups came face-to-face, leading to another round of clashes before police intervened. Officers detained several protesters from both sides in an effort to prevent further violence.
Traffic Disrupted Across Central Hyderabad
The political confrontation caused major disruption across central Hyderabad. Traffic movement came to a standstill in Nampally, Moazzam Jahi Market and several adjoining roads as police diverted vehicles and cleared protest sites. Commuters experienced significant delays during the peak hours while law enforcement worked to restore normal movement.
Similar Clash Reported in Karimnagar
A separate incident was also reported from Karimnagar, where Congress workers attempted to stage a protest outside the office of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay. The demonstration led to another confrontation between BJP and Congress supporters.
Police used a lathi charge to disperse the rival groups after tensions escalated. BJP leaders alleged that their workers were attacked with sticks by Congress activists, while party supporters responded during the confrontation. Authorities later restored order and continued monitoring the situation to prevent any further disturbances.
