Infrastructure – Uttar Pradesh Set for Massive Highway Expansion Over Next Two Years
Infrastructure –Uttar Pradesh is set to witness a major transformation in its road network as the Union government has announced large-scale investments aimed at strengthening transport infrastructure, improving connectivity, and supporting long-term economic development.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday announced that road infrastructure projects worth nearly Rs 5 lakh crore are expected to be completed across Uttar Pradesh within the next two years. Alongside these ongoing works, he also unveiled fresh highway projects estimated at Rs 50,000 crore to Rs 60,000 crore, marking another significant investment in the state’s transport sector.
National Highway Projects Receive Fresh Push
The announcement came during a programme where Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for three National Highway projects valued at more than Rs 4,850 crore. Addressing the gathering, the minister said every proposal discussed with officials from the Uttar Pradesh government had received approval, allowing multiple infrastructure initiatives to move forward without delay.
He noted that the Centre remains committed to expanding the state’s road network through improved planning and timely execution of projects designed to meet future transportation needs.
Roads Seen as Key to Economic Growth
Highlighting the importance of transport infrastructure, Gadkari said that well-developed roads serve as the backbone of economic progress. According to him, better connectivity encourages trade, attracts industrial investment, supports business expansion, and creates employment opportunities across both urban and rural regions.
He added that efficient highways also improve logistics, reduce travel costs, and contribute to lowering poverty and unemployment by opening new economic opportunities for people.
Uttar Pradesh’s Development Pace Highlighted
Referring to the state’s growth trajectory, the minister said Uttar Pradesh has witnessed faster development since 2014. Describing the state as the heart of the country, he remarked that India’s overall progress is closely linked with the continued advancement of Uttar Pradesh because of its size, population, and economic potential.
He stressed that sustained investment in infrastructure would further strengthen the state’s contribution to national growth in the coming years.
Lucknow-Sitapur Highway to Be Expanded
Among the major announcements was the proposed widening of the Lucknow-Sitapur highway into a six-lane corridor. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 1,200 crore, is expected to significantly improve travel between the two cities.
According to Gadkari, the upgraded highway will reduce the present journey time of nearly two hours to approximately 50 minutes, making travel more convenient for commuters and commercial transport alike.
The minister also shared his recent experience of travelling from Kanpur to Lucknow in just 22 minutes, pointing to the improvements already achieved through modern highway infrastructure in the region.
Alternative Transport Systems Under Consideration
Apart from conventional highways, Gadkari said the government is examining new electric mass transit options to improve urban mobility. These include ropeway systems and elevated electric buses, which could provide environmentally friendly transport solutions in densely populated areas.
He clarified, however, that metro rail projects are outside the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Centre and State Emphasise Infrastructure-Led Growth
Speaking on the occasion, Gadkari said delivering world-class road connectivity across Uttar Pradesh remains one of the Central government’s highest priorities. He expressed confidence that continuous infrastructure investment would strengthen regional connectivity and improve the state’s competitiveness.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also addressed the event, stating that the expanding network of highways would encourage greater investment, support industrial development, promote tourism, and generate employment opportunities across Uttar Pradesh, reinforcing the state’s role as a major contributor to India’s economic progress.
