Crime – Uttar Pradesh Police Intensifies Search for Absconding Afsha Ansari
Crime – The Uttar Pradesh Police has stepped up its efforts to trace Afsha Ansari, the wife of late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, by carrying out a wide-ranging operation across multiple districts. Acting on intelligence inputs, police teams conducted coordinated searches at dozens of locations associated with the Ansari network, marking one of the most extensive actions in recent months.

Coordinated Raids Across Multiple Locations
According to officials, raids were carried out at 61 different premises linked to relatives, associates, and supporters believed to be connected with the network once led by Mukhtar Ansari. The operation extended through Sunday night and involved multiple police units working simultaneously. Authorities confirmed that 24 individuals were detained and taken to local police stations for questioning as part of the investigation.
Police teams also searched the Ansari family residence in Darjitola Yusufpur in Mohammadabad. During this search, investigators reportedly gathered fresh leads that could help locate Afsha Ansari, who has remained out of reach for several years despite a cash reward of Rs 50,000 announced for information leading to her arrest.
Operation Vajra and Renewed Focus
Senior police officials stated that the action was linked to a broader initiative known as Operation Vajra, launched to curb activities that could disturb public order. Authorities observed suspicious movements and activities in certain areas following the operation’s rollout, prompting them to identify individuals involved and expand their investigation.
To strengthen intelligence gathering, 12 specialized teams were formed from five police stations. These teams were tasked with tracking movements, verifying information, and searching locations associated with individuals suspected of maintaining links to the Ansari network. The operation reflects a renewed push by the police to dismantle residual influence of organized crime groups in the region.
Background of the Network and Enforcement Measures
Officials highlighted that many of the individuals whose premises were searched had previously been under scrutiny. Over the past five years, authorities have cancelled 91 arms licences linked to people associated with the group. Police records also indicate that law enforcement has maintained detailed information on where these weapons were deposited or surrendered, suggesting a sustained monitoring effort.
The current crackdown builds on earlier actions taken between 2019 and 2020, when agencies targeted the financial and logistical infrastructure of the network. However, officials acknowledged that there had been limited major operations in recent times, particularly after Mukhtar Ansari’s death in Banda jail in March 2024 and subsequent legal developments involving his family members.
Warning to Associates and Ongoing Investigation
Police have issued warnings to families of individuals who could not be located during the raids, asking them to ensure their presence for questioning. Authorities are also preparing detailed dossiers on those under scrutiny. These records, officials say, will assist in tracking patterns and preventing the re-emergence of organized criminal activities in the future.
During the operation, members of Mukhtar Ansari’s family were also questioned at their residence. Despite the extensive search, Afsha Ansari was not found. However, investigators remain confident that the information gathered during the raids will prove crucial in narrowing down her whereabouts.
Continued Efforts to Trace Afsha Ansari
Police officials reiterated that the search for Afsha Ansari remains a priority. She had been declared an absconder even before Mukhtar Ansari’s death and has continued to evade arrest. Authorities believe that sustained pressure through coordinated operations and intelligence-driven actions will eventually lead to her capture.
The latest operation underscores the administration’s intent to maintain strict control over organized crime networks and ensure that individuals evading the law are brought to justice through systematic and persistent efforts.
