Accident – Political tensions rise after fatal Mathura road incident in UP
Accident – A political debate has intensified in Uttar Pradesh following the death of a man in Mathura, with opposition leaders questioning the state’s law and order situation while the government has promised strict action after a preliminary investigation ruled out criminal conspiracy.

Opposition raises concerns over safety and governance
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday criticised the state government, alleging a breakdown in public safety across Uttar Pradesh. Referring to the Mathura incident, he questioned how such events continue to occur in sensitive areas, including religious towns.
He also cited other recent incidents, including a reported student killing in Varanasi, to argue that violent crimes are becoming increasingly visible. According to Yadav, such developments reflect poorly on governance and raise concerns about public security in the state.
The opposition leader further accused the ruling administration of fostering divisions, claiming that tensions are being amplified instead of addressed. He suggested that the current environment allows such incidents to occur without sufficient deterrence.
Allegations over misuse of law enforcement
Yadav also alleged that police resources are being diverted toward political purposes rather than maintaining public order. He argued that when law enforcement agencies are not focused on their primary duties, it can impact their ability to prevent crime effectively.
He pointed to a pattern of incidents in cities such as Mathura, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur, stating that these events highlight broader concerns about safety, including for women. According to him, consistent attention to law enforcement priorities is essential to ensure public trust.
Government responds with assurances
In response, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and instructed officials to act promptly. He directed authorities to identify those responsible and ensure that strict legal action is taken where necessary.
The state government emphasized that no individual involved in any wrongdoing would be spared and that maintaining law and order remains a priority. Officials were asked to visit the site immediately and oversee the investigation process.
Details of the Mathura incident
According to police officials, the incident took place in the Kosi area of Mathura during the early hours of the morning. Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar stated that the deceased, identified as Chandrashekhar, also known locally as Pharsa Baba, had attempted to stop a vehicle he found suspicious.
During this time, dense fog reportedly reduced visibility on the road. A truck approaching from behind struck him, leading to his death. Authorities clarified that the collision appeared to be accidental based on initial findings.
The vehicle that had been stopped was found to be carrying grocery items. Meanwhile, the truck involved in the accident was transporting wire and had a Rajasthan registration. Both the driver and helper were residents of Alwar. The driver sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
Police deny rumours of illegal activity
Addressing speculation surrounding the case, the police stated that there is no evidence linking the incident to cattle smuggling. Officials urged the public not to spread unverified claims and emphasized that the investigation is being conducted based on facts.
The clarification came after protests erupted in the area, with locals blocking roads and demanding accountability. Tensions briefly escalated as demonstrators clashed with police, highlighting the sensitivity of the situation.
Ongoing investigation and public reaction
Authorities have assured that all aspects of the case will be thoroughly examined. While initial reports indicate an accident, officials said further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
The incident has sparked wider discussions about road safety, law enforcement response, and the political narrative surrounding such events in Uttar Pradesh. Both the government and opposition continue to present differing perspectives, reflecting the broader political climate in the state.
