FireSafety – Bengal Government Orders Demolition After Deadly Tiljala Factory Blaze
FireSafety – A major fire incident in Kolkata’s Tiljala area has triggered strict action from the West Bengal government after investigators found serious violations related to building approval, fire protection, and electricity safety at the factory where two people lost their lives.

West Bengal authorities have ordered the demolition of a factory building in Kolkata’s Tiljala locality following a devastating fire that killed two people and injured three others earlier this week. The decision came after a preliminary investigation revealed that the unit had allegedly been operating without legal approval and lacked mandatory safety arrangements.
Probe Reveals Multiple Violations
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, senior state officials said a multi-department inquiry team was formed immediately after the incident to determine the cause of the blaze and examine whether the factory was following regulatory norms. The investigation reportedly found that the structure had no sanctioned construction plan and was functioning without proper fire prevention systems or electrical safety measures.
Officials stated that the violations were severe enough to warrant immediate administrative action. Authorities also indicated that the building was being used in a manner that posed significant risks to workers and nearby residents.
Arrests Made in Connection With Incident
The state administration confirmed that the factory owner, along with another individual linked to the operation of the unit, has been taken into custody. Police are continuing their investigation to determine whether negligence or violation of safety regulations directly contributed to the deaths and injuries caused by the fire.
Government representatives said legal proceedings would continue against those responsible for operating unauthorized industrial units in densely populated areas. The administration also warned that similar establishments functioning without approvals would face strict consequences.
Power and Water Supply to Be Permanently Cut
As part of the crackdown, the government has instructed power distribution company CESC Limited to permanently disconnect electricity connections to factories operating illegally in Tiljala, Kasba, and surrounding neighborhoods.
Authorities further directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to stop the water supply to the affected premises and begin demolition of the structure within a day. Officials said the move was aimed at preventing any future use of the building and sending a strong message against unauthorized commercial activity.
Government Signals Tough Stand on Illegal Units
State authorities emphasized that there would be no tolerance for corruption or illegal industrial operations that compromise public safety. Officials added that inspections may now be intensified across several parts of Kolkata to identify buildings operating without approvals or lacking emergency safety systems.
The latest incident has once again raised concerns over the presence of unregulated warehouses and manufacturing units in crowded urban areas. Safety experts have frequently warned that many such facilities fail to maintain proper fire exits, electrical standards, or emergency response systems, increasing the risk of large-scale accidents.
Fire Spread Rapidly Through Building
The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon at a building reportedly being used as a leather storage and processing unit in the Tiljala area of Kolkata. According to emergency officials, flames first emerged from the first floor around 1:45 pm before spreading rapidly across the structure.
Witnesses described thick black smoke covering the area within minutes, making rescue operations difficult. Firefighters later managed to control the blaze, but two people died in the incident while three others suffered burn injuries and were shifted for medical treatment.
Authorities are continuing to examine the exact cause of the fire while also reviewing the safety status of similar factories operating in nearby locations.
