Education Leadership – St Stephen’s College Appoints First Woman Principal in 145 Years
Education Leadership – St Stephen’s College is preparing for a landmark administrative change as Professor Susan Elias becomes the institution’s first woman principal in its long academic history.

St Stephen’s College, one of the most respected institutions affiliated with University of Delhi, is set to enter a new chapter on June 1 with the appointment of Professor Susan Elias as principal. The development carries historic significance, as no woman has previously held the top administrative role at the college since its establishment more than a century ago.
The announcement was officially issued by the college administration earlier this week, confirming that Professor Elias will assume office at the beginning of the new academic month. Founded in 1881, the institution has long been regarded as one of the leading centres of higher education in India.
Leadership Change Comes After Administrative Disputes
Professor Elias will replace outgoing principal John Varghese, whose tenure saw multiple disagreements involving sections of the teaching community and university authorities. In recent months, administrative decisions taken under his leadership drew criticism from faculty members.
The situation intensified when teachers from the physics department moved the Delhi High Court against a series of appointments approved during the outgoing administration. The court subsequently granted a stay order on those appointments, adding to the ongoing tensions surrounding governance issues at the college.
Despite the disputes, the institution now appears focused on stabilising its academic and administrative environment under new leadership.
Strong Academic and Technical Background
Professor Elias brings extensive experience from both engineering education and university administration. Trained as an engineer, she completed her Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Madras. She later earned both her postgraduate and doctoral degrees in Multimedia Technology from Anna University.
Her academic journey also includes postdoctoral research work at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, widely recognised for advanced scientific and technological studies.
Over the years, she has built a career spanning teaching, research, institutional management and academic planning across several major educational institutions in the country.
Experience Across Multiple Universities
Professor Elias began her professional career as a lecturer at Dr MGR Engineering College in Chennai. She later joined Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, where she spent nearly two decades serving as professor and head of department.
Her leadership roles expanded further at Vellore Institute of Technology, where she held important administrative responsibilities, including dean of the School of Electronics Engineering. She also worked as deputy director at the institution’s Centre for Advanced Data Sciences.
In recent years, she served as pro-vice chancellor at Chandigarh University. Alongside that role, she headed the Digital Health and Bio-Innovations Centre at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science.
Historic Appointment Draws Attention in Academic Circles
The appointment is being viewed as a notable moment in the history of St Stephen’s College, particularly given the institution’s long-standing traditions and influence within India’s higher education system.
Education observers believe the transition could bring a fresh administrative approach at a time when universities across the country are dealing with evolving academic policies, governance challenges and growing expectations around institutional transparency.
Professor Elias is expected to formally take charge on June 1, marking the beginning of a new phase for one of Delhi’s most prominent colleges.
