GovernmentConvoy – Maharashtra Reviews Major Cut in Ministers’ Vehicle Fleets
GovernmentConvoy – Maharashtra’s BJP-led administration is preparing to review a proposal that could significantly reduce the number of vehicles accompanying state ministers during official travel, reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for restrained public spending and lower fuel consumption.

The proposal is currently under consideration at the highest level of the state government, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis leading discussions on the issue. According to officials familiar with the matter, the administration is evaluating whether ministerial convoys can be reduced by nearly half without affecting essential security arrangements or disrupting official duties.
High-Level Meetings Held in Mumbai
Sources said the chief minister chaired an initial meeting earlier on Wednesday to examine the operational and security implications of the plan. Another round of discussions involving senior officials was scheduled later in the day.
Top bureaucrats, including the Maharashtra chief secretary and the state director general of police, are expected to participate in the review process. The meetings are focused on balancing security requirements with the government’s broader objective of reducing unnecessary expenditure and fuel use.
Officials indicated that the state government wants to introduce a practical and sustainable model rather than making symbolic changes alone. Security agencies have reportedly been asked to study how convoy movements can be streamlined while continuing to follow safety protocols for ministers.
Push for Administrative Austerity
The discussions in Maharashtra come shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly encouraged citizens and government institutions to adopt austerity measures amid global economic pressures and rising concerns linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis.
During a public gathering in Hyderabad on Sunday, the prime minister stressed the need to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel. He urged people to make greater use of public transportation systems such as Metro rail networks, consider carpooling, and shift towards electric vehicles wherever possible.
He also suggested increasing the use of railway freight services for parcel transportation and encouraged work-from-home practices in suitable sectors as a way to lower fuel demand and conserve foreign exchange reserves.
Prime Minister’s Convoy Also Reduced
In recent days, changes have reportedly already been introduced in the prime minister’s own travel arrangements. Official sources stated that the size of PM Modi’s convoy was reduced during several domestic visits while maintaining mandatory protection measures under Special Protection Group guidelines.
The move was viewed within government circles as a message supporting disciplined expenditure and responsible fuel usage by public authorities. Officials believe state governments may now adopt similar steps as part of a broader effort to demonstrate administrative efficiency and resource management.
Security Concerns Remain Key Factor
Despite the proposed reduction, authorities in Maharashtra are expected to proceed cautiously because ministerial security remains a sensitive issue. Officials said any decision would only be implemented after a complete assessment of logistical requirements, emergency response capabilities, and police deployment patterns.
Security experts are examining which categories of escort vehicles are essential and which can be minimized during routine travel. The government is also reviewing whether alternative arrangements could help reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption without affecting official movement schedules.
An official statement on the matter is expected after the conclusion of the final review meeting. If approved, the policy could become one of the most visible austerity measures introduced by the Maharashtra government in recent years.
