Portugal World Cup journey and Ronaldo’s final tournament farewell –

The 41-year-old said he would not return for another FIFA World Cup, bringing down the curtain on a career that stretched across six editions of the competition. Ronaldo leaves the tournament as one of its most recognisable figures, although the World Cup trophy remains the major international honour missing from his collection.

A Record Across Six World Cup Editions

Ronaldo made 27 World Cup appearances for Portugal, placing him second on the all-time list behind Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who has played 30 matches. He scored 11 goals during those appearances and became the first male player to find the net in six separate World Cup tournaments.

At the current finals, Ronaldo scored three times. Two of those goals came in Portugal’s 5-0 opening victory over Uzbekistan. He also converted a penalty against Croatia in the last 32, scoring his first goal in a World Cup knockout match and helping Portugal progress to the next round.

Ronaldo Reflects on Portugal’s Exit

Speaking to SportTV after the loss to Spain, Ronaldo said he was disappointed by the manner of Portugal’s elimination but believed he had fulfilled his responsibilities during the tournament.

He said he would take time with his family before making any decisions about the next stage of his career, adding that he did not want to react immediately after an emotional defeat.

Ronaldo also described the demands of international football, noting that players must accept both success and disappointment. He said he would leave the tournament with a clear conscience after giving everything possible for Portugal.

From Germany 2006 to His Final Appearance

Ronaldo’s World Cup story began in Germany in 2006, when he scored his first tournament goal against Iran. Portugal reached the semi-finals that year, their first appearance in the last four for four decades, and it remained the deepest run of Ronaldo’s World Cup career.

He went on to feature and score in South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. His consistency across nearly two decades made him one of the most enduring players in World Cup history.

Portugal Success Beyond the World Cup

Although the World Cup title eluded Ronaldo, he played a central role in Portugal’s most successful modern era. The national team won the European Championship in 2016 and later lifted the UEFA Nations League twice.

Ronaldo said Portugal had not won a major international title before his generation achieved those milestones. He stressed that he would remember those victories with pride while accepting that the World Cup chapter had now closed.

Portugal will now look ahead to rebuilding after another early exit, while Ronaldo’s final World Cup campaign will be remembered for its records, longevity and the lasting impact he had on the national team.
