Sports News – Australia Weighs Team Changes as Phoebe Litchfield Nears Return Against India
Sports News – Australia could receive a timely boost ahead of its final group-stage clash after positive signs emerged regarding the recovery of one of its leading batters.

Australia Receives Positive Injury Update Before India Match
Australia is expected to welcome back batter Phoebe Litchfield for its last group-stage fixture against India in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in London on Sunday. Head coach Shelley Nitschke expressed confidence that the left-hander is progressing well after recovering from a quadriceps injury that forced her to miss the team’s previous three matches.
Litchfield sustained the injury during Australia’s victory over South Africa at Old Trafford on June 13. Despite the setback, she played a decisive innings of 50 runs from only 24 deliveries before leaving the field. Since then, the team has managed without her as she continued her rehabilitation.
Coach Confident About Litchfield’s Recovery
Speaking about the latest fitness update, Nitschke said Litchfield has shown encouraging improvement during her recovery program. While the coaching staff remains optimistic, the final decision regarding her inclusion will depend on her fitness assessment closer to match day.
Australia has scheduled training sessions at Lord’s on Friday and Wormsley on Saturday, where the medical and coaching staff will closely evaluate her readiness before confirming the playing XI.
Batting Order Could Undergo Another Adjustment
Litchfield’s absence prompted Australia to promote experienced all-rounder Ellyse Perry to the No. 3 position in the batting order. Perry responded impressively, delivering a match-winning performance against Pakistan that earned her the Player of the Match award.
If Litchfield is declared fit, she is expected to reclaim her regular place at No. 3. That move would likely see Perry return to the No. 4 position, resulting in another adjustment to Australia’s batting lineup. Such a change would also require one member of the current playing XI to make way.
Nitschke acknowledged that selecting the final combination would not be straightforward, noting that the squad has created healthy competition through strong performances in recent matches.
Selection Decisions Extend Beyond the Batting Line-Up
Australia’s selection discussions are not limited to the batting order. Young fast bowler Lucy Hamilton is considered one of the players who could miss out if Litchfield returns to the side, although the final combination will depend on the team’s preferred balance for the India contest.
The coaching group is also considering experienced all-rounder Grace Harris, whose familiarity with Lord’s could strengthen her chances of returning to the squad. Harris has previously represented the London Spirit in domestic competitions, giving her valuable experience at the historic venue.
Australia Focused on Finishing Group Stage Strongly
Australia has already demonstrated its depth throughout the tournament despite dealing with injuries. The possible return of Litchfield would provide additional batting stability as the team prepares for one of its most significant group-stage matches.
With a place in the knockout stage at stake, the coaching staff is expected to carefully assess every selection decision before finalising the squad. The coming training sessions will play an important role in determining whether Litchfield is ready to rejoin the team against a strong Indian side.
